Interesting that the first two 2012 BC Rugby News (CDI) MVP Club members are current or past members of The Rock - Zac Coughlan and now Brian McKenzie. This takes it to 5 out of 14 (36%) including 2011 - Chauncey O'Toole, Ciaran Hearn and Frank Walsh. I believe at least one other winner is from Ontario as well. Shows the significant contribution being made by easterners (or former easterners) in the CDI.

The IRB has a site as well.

I saw this today on the TSN website. I hadn't seen any mention of it on here (strange) BC Rugby's site (expected) or on BCRN(stranger), but it was news last week.

http://tsn.ca/rugby/story/?id=379508

One of the BC Bears was suspended from rugby for 2 years for steroids. I hadn't heard about this until now. Does anyone know the answers to the following questions?

1. Which game he tested positive in?

2. Do the BC Bears forfeit ALL of the games he played in, or just the one he tested positive in?

3. Which game(s) did he play in?

4. Does his suspension cover only rep games or is he unable to suit up for his club as well?

Wow!!! If that every comes to fruition it would be a great development for rugby in Canada and BC... Brockton Oval is seriously the rugby equivalent of the field of dreams... old growth on one side, the ocean on the other... very beautiful and historic location. First Canadian test match against Japan was held there.

It's a shame nothing thus far seems to have come of it.

This sounds very similar to what I saw in Ottawa twenty years ago. I was a student at Carleton. We played, I believe, York, and a party was held after the game with the members of both sides. Although it was a varsity sport, the team ran like clubs, so there was a first side and a bunch of seconds who were essentially like frat boys. The party included all manner of lame frat-boy naked bullshit, such as push-ups with penises in a cup of liquor that was then consumed, head-shaving and a baby-elephant walk of rookies across the front-lawn in broad day-light while a famly unloaded groceries from their car. I had just come off tour with my club and explained to my new teammates that if they wished for me to particpate in this "fun", they could try and make me. We did not have hazing, nor any kind of initiation in my club. Unlike club rugby, nobody at the two schools was smart enough to remember any songs, so they had song-books of the lamest misogynist songs. Unfortunately, somebody kept one of the song-books and provided it to the press and the school. A mighty shit-storm ensued. At around the same time, the Lacrosse team got busted with the same song-book, and the club was suspended. Ahh, Rugby Culture. Moments to remember.

From two sources

I'm privy to information regarding the mentioned party. There were between 5 to 10 kegs at this party, with some guys getting their heads shaved and others walking around naked. The house was packed, with several others hanging in the front and back yards. There was hollering, yelling, loud music and urination on lawns and fences. Drunk young people wandering around in the street. The police/by-law officers visited the house several times. Garbage everywhere. I know if this type of party occurred on my parent's street, they and the rest of their neighbours would be very upset. Who wouldn't be? The university/athletics department did what they had to do in regards to their athletes contravening the code of conduct. The rugby team did this to themselves.

Also privy ... There were actually 2 parties. The rugby group gathered at 3pm and phased out around 5-6pm. It was a meet & greet event, for the rookies to mix and mingle with veteran players, held off campus in a private residence. A second party ensued in the evening at the same location with a different mix, when the boisterous activity began. Several issues here. It was a private residence, not a university owned, operated or controlled residence. The party was not sponsored, sanctioned or supervised by the university or anyone from the athletic department. The players were not dressed in uniforms nor representing the university. It was not some sort of post-game celebration. Someone at the university, unrelated to the the group in question suggested that the party might be some sort of a hazing. There was no hazing. Shaved heads - no - haircuts - looks like may of them adopted crew cuts. The decision rendered to suspend was made upon the fine print in the code of conduct that no kegs are allowed at un

Faust, i don't know the details of what took place obviously and maybe you don't either, so I won't speculate of the how and when. But if they have signed up to a code of conduct and then broke one of its specifics I dont see the problem here. If an individual doesn't like like the code of conduct the school puts forth then don't sign up to it.

Simple as.

Most sports organisations do these type of ethics codes now to specify what is 'not ok' to do in their organisation. Clearly the people in the athletics dept thought it was serious enough to forfeit 2 games.

So Irish, if they got together as friends, then it is ok. If they got together as a Rugby club, it is wrong.
New government policy got after the innocent and leave the crinimals on the street.
Still no convictions on the riots in Vancouver and yet a bunch boys having beers, they are forced to forfeit.
They would have not done this if it was hockey or football.

Keep in mind the legal drinking age in Ontario is 19 not 18, so many first year students are not of legal drinking age. Plus, they have a code of conduct, which they no doubt all signed up to. If they broke it one would think there are prescribed consequences.

Could there possibly be a better example of all that is wrong with this land called Canada?

“It's more the alcohol,” Kendall said in an interview. “Nobody was hurt and the police weren't involved. It wasn't severe in that sense, it wasn't a hazing incident.

“It was just one of those situations where because there was alcohol involved"

Guelph (3-1-1) currently stands second in the Ontario University Athletics standing.

“Losing these games will hurt them and that's unfortunate because they're having one of their best years ever”

Well, I'm glad they nipped that in the bud. We wouldn't want to have to deal with success. God knows where that could lead!

University of Guelph suspends rugby team
Guelph, Ont.— The Canadian Press
7 comments Email Tweet Print Decrease text size Increase text size The University of Guelph has suspended its men's rugby team for two games over an off-campus party that breached the student athletic code of conduct.

Guelph athletics director Tom Kendall said the Sept. 17 party violated the code over both misuse of alcohol and staging an initiation.

“It's more the alcohol,” Kendall said in an interview. “Nobody was hurt and the police weren't involved. It wasn't severe in that sense, it wasn't a hazing incident.

“It was just one of those situations where because there was alcohol involved, it was not within the standards we expect of our athletes.”

“Initiation-type parties” are not allowed at the university.

“We just don't think it reflects well on our department and we basically put that in the code of conduct,” Kendall said.

Kendall declined to say what kind of initiation was involved, saying it was not “100 per cent clear.”

The suspension means the Gryphons will forfeit games against Toronto (Oct. 14) and McMaster (Oct. 21). The games will go down as 1-0 defeats.

Guelph will play its final regular season game Oct. 29 against Queen's in Kingston, Ont.

Guelph (3-1-1) currently stands second in the Ontario University Athletics standing.

“Losing these games will hurt them and that's unfortunate because they're having one of their best years ever,” Kendall said. “But this is unfortunately one of those life lessons.”

Kendall said the case is now considered closed.

Below is the newspaper article that was printed on Tuesday Sept. 13th. Nice to see a club the size of Belleville RFC winning an Ontario title. Also great, was one old(Belleville RFC) playing a current (Bytown Blues)EORU club for the title. Coaches Larry Cook and Warren McCann should be congratulated for the season they had.

Bulldogs win U16 Ontario title
Beat Bytown on final play

ADY VOS

The Intelligencer

The Belleville Tim Horton's Bulldogs won the U16 Ontario rugby championship on the final play of the game Saturday in Markham.

Trailing 13-7 in the dying seconds, the Bulldogs rallied for a 14-13 victory over the Ottawa Bytown Blues.

"With time running out in the game we had a drive off of a lineout near the Bytown try line," said coach Warren McCann. "We did several quick taps on penalties to move the ball to the centre of the field then with another penalty against Bytown, the referee called last play. The forwards mauled the ball over the line with Nathan Shakura scoring. With the score 12-13, and no time on the clock, Devon Fobert kicked the two-point convert for the win."

The victory capped an impressive season for the U16 Bulldogs who posted a 10-1-1 overall record.

Prior to the season, McCann said he expected the Bulldogs to compete for the championship.

"Right from the start you could see this was a good team," said McCann. "Last year we made it to the Final Four but this team had better balance and more skill so I was expecting them to do better."

McCann said the Bulldogs were a force right from the start of the season.

Their only loss came early in the season, on the final play of the game, against Lindsay.

"The whole team contributed to the success of the team," said McCann.

He said "powerful, skillful forwards and fast skillful backs" allowed the Bulldogs to score 344 points this season while allowing just 118.

He had special praise for the the Bulldogs co-captains.

"In the playoffs we had to fight back in the second half twice to pull games out. Josh Furmidge led the forwards at scrum half and Joey Thompson led the forwards as number 8," said McCann.

Coming into the championship game, the Blues were undefeated.

Bytown took an early 3-0 lead on a penalty kick but the Bulldogs responded when Fobert scampered more than 50 yards on the wing scoring the go-ahead try. Brandon Maracle converted and the Bulldogs were in the lead 7-3.

But before the half was over, Bytown scored a pair of unconverted tries for a 13-7 lead.

And that's the way the game stayed until the final seconds when the Bulldogs won it with a converted try as time ran out.

To get to the championship game, the Bulldogs defeated Mississauga 17-12 in the semi-final.

Scoring tries for the Bulldogs were centre Jeff Radford, forward Jordan Barry-Aldrich and winger Tristan Muir. Brandon Maracle converted the first try.

The Bytown Blues had blanked the Toronto Nomads 12-0 to earn their spot in the championship game.

The Bulldogs reached the Final Four by winning their playoff pool in Markham defeating Aurora Barbarians 34-5 and the Oshawa Vikings 14-12.

Canada West has no men's rugby. Maybe if they did a national tournament could be held.

This is true, in that Canada West doesn't recognize men's rugby as a varsity sport, although at least two of it's members (UBC and UVic) have varsity men's teams.

Other Canada West member schools that I'm aware of - University of Calgary, University of Alberta, University of Lethbridge, Mount Royal University, UBC Okanagan, and possibly others I'm not aware of - have men's teams at the club level.

This probably doesn't mean anything in the grand bureaucratic scheme of things, but it would certainly seem to indicate there is a market for men's rugby in Canada West.

It's called 'game sense' and it's what Canadians are missing most of all. I'm with you, Titan. Our players are too often taught rugby like football and hockey and basketball, where the games are very coach-directed. Rugby's the complete opposite, imo, with the ball in play for much longer, the coach being far removed from the decision makers, and the ever-changing nature of the game hard to call truly effective plays and sequences for (two terms I hate the most!). ... yes, I'm a proponent of "heads up rugby" and constantly work with players on their decision making and awareness in game situations to hone those skills.

Well said.

Bandito,

I agree with you. And it applies to all levels. The more the players make the calls the better off they are. Walking a team through a game while it's on may be good in the short term but it turns that player into mindless robots that are incapable of making the right decision. In my experience, these players will fail when the play against players that can think for themselves.

Knower, if you really want to know ... I've been to adult premier and high school finals in the last two years since returning from overseas, so the players I've coached have done quite well under my philosophies. For both teams, we employed very little of the type of structure seen in North American sports, with game direction falling to the decision makers on the field (upwards of five or six of them who have key roles in different situations), and a lot of 'game sense' instruction at training to allow them to scan for opportunities and make decisions with confidence. For the high school team, we scrapped plays altogether and stuck with a simple game plan of - attack / get the ball to space quickly, and get three players around the ball carrier to keep the ball off the deck as much as possible. For both, we film games and analyse small chunks periodically which typify the things we do well and the things we need to work on.

Agree with Bandito. Constantly instructing and ordering players around during the game can get out of control sometime. I think this has a little bit to do with our proximity to hockey and football cultures. In my experience, I have not seen quite the same from 'down under' coaches. Of course there are going to be some exceptions but I like to think that most of the coaching should happen during practice. Let the players play the games.
