Interesting that the first two 2012 BC Rugby News (CDI) MVP Club members are current or past members of The Rock - Zac Coughlan and now Brian McKenzie. This takes it to 5 out of 14 (36%) including 2011 - Chauncey O'Toole, Ciaran Hearn and Frank Walsh. I believe at least one other winner is from Ontario as well. Shows the significant contribution being made by easterners (or former easterners) in the CDI.

7 comments Email Tweet Print Decrease text size Increase text size The University of Guelph has suspended its men's rugby team for two games over an off-campus party that breached the student athletic code of conduct.

Guelph athletics director Tom Kendall said the Sept. 17 party violated the code over both misuse of alcohol and staging an initiation.

“It's more the alcohol,” Kendall said in an interview. “Nobody was hurt and the police weren't involved. It wasn't severe in that sense, it wasn't a hazing incident.

“It was just one of those situations where because there was alcohol involved, it was not within the standards we expect of our athletes.”

“Initiation-type parties” are not allowed at the university.

“We just don't think it reflects well on our department and we basically put that in the code of conduct,” Kendall said.

Kendall declined to say what kind of initiation was involved, saying it was not “100 per cent clear.”

The suspension means the Gryphons will forfeit games against Toronto (Oct. 14) and McMaster (Oct. 21). The games will go down as 1-0 defeats.

Guelph will play its final regular season game Oct. 29 against Queen's in Kingston, Ont.

Guelph (3-1-1) currently stands second in the Ontario University Athletics standing.

“Losing these games will hurt them and that's unfortunate because they're having one of their best years ever,” Kendall said. “But this is unfortunately one of those life lessons.”

Kendall said the case is now considered closed.

I saw this today on the TSN website. I hadn't seen any mention of it on here (strange) BC Rugby's site (expected) or on BCRN(stranger), but it was news last week.

One of the BC Bears was suspended from rugby for 2 years for steroids. I hadn't heard about this until now. Does anyone know the answers to the following questions?

1. Which game he tested positive in?

2. Do the BC Bears forfeit ALL of the games he played in, or just the one he tested positive in?

3. Which game(s) did he play in?

4. Does his suspension cover only rep games or is he unable to suit up for his club as well?

Below is the newspaper article that was printed on Tuesday Sept. 13th. Nice to see a club the size of Belleville RFC winning an Ontario title. Also great, was one old(Belleville RFC) playing a current (Bytown Blues)EORU club for the title. Coaches Larry Cook and Warren McCann should be congratulated for the season they had.

Bulldogs win U16 Ontario title
Beat Bytown on final play

ADY VOS

The Intelligencer

The Belleville Tim Horton's Bulldogs won the U16 Ontario rugby championship on the final play of the game Saturday in Markham.

Trailing 13-7 in the dying seconds, the Bulldogs rallied for a 14-13 victory over the Ottawa Bytown Blues.

"With time running out in the game we had a drive off of a lineout near the Bytown try line," said coach Warren McCann. "We did several quick taps on penalties to move the ball to the centre of the field then with another penalty against Bytown, the referee called last play. The forwards mauled the ball over the line with Nathan Shakura scoring. With the score 12-13, and no time on the clock, Devon Fobert kicked the two-point convert for the win."

The victory capped an impressive season for the U16 Bulldogs who posted a 10-1-1 overall record.

Prior to the season, McCann said he expected the Bulldogs to compete for the championship.

"Right from the start you could see this was a good team," said McCann. "Last year we made it to the Final Four but this team had better balance and more skill so I was expecting them to do better."

McCann said the Bulldogs were a force right from the start of the season.

Their only loss came early in the season, on the final play of the game, against Lindsay.

"The whole team contributed to the success of the team," said McCann.

He said "powerful, skillful forwards and fast skillful backs" allowed the Bulldogs to score 344 points this season while allowing just 118.

He had special praise for the the Bulldogs co-captains.

"In the playoffs we had to fight back in the second half twice to pull games out. Josh Furmidge led the forwards at scrum half and Joey Thompson led the forwards as number 8," said McCann.

Coming into the championship game, the Blues were undefeated.

Bytown took an early 3-0 lead on a penalty kick but the Bulldogs responded when Fobert scampered more than 50 yards on the wing scoring the go-ahead try. Brandon Maracle converted and the Bulldogs were in the lead 7-3.

But before the half was over, Bytown scored a pair of unconverted tries for a 13-7 lead.

And that's the way the game stayed until the final seconds when the Bulldogs won it with a converted try as time ran out.

To get to the championship game, the Bulldogs defeated Mississauga 17-12 in the semi-final.

Scoring tries for the Bulldogs were centre Jeff Radford, forward Jordan Barry-Aldrich and winger Tristan Muir. Brandon Maracle converted the first try.

The Bytown Blues had blanked the Toronto Nomads 12-0 to earn their spot in the championship game.

The Bulldogs reached the Final Four by winning their playoff pool in Markham defeating Aurora Barbarians 34-5 and the Oshawa Vikings 14-12.

Attended the Rock v Blues game today. Good, even match. The thing that stood out for me, however, was the astonishingly bad behaviour by the Rock coaches.

During the first game, U-20 Rock v Niagara, I was surprised as how much yelling the Rock coaches did. Nothing wrong with that, just unusual. It was non-stop and at top volume for the entire 80 minutes. It was kind of entertaining, really.

In the next game, Rock v Ontario, the tone changed. The yelling was still non-stop but it changed from being the barking of instructions to the team and took on a mean-spirited theme. I am not used to coaches swearing so much. I was also surprised by the Rock coach using the F word when addressing a ref. Once to a line ref's face.

As the tide of the game turned, the Rock coach amped up the commentary. Again, at the top of his lungs. By the end his earlier clown-like editorials turned pretty bitter. But that was not the worst part. During the late stages of the game, with Ontario attempting a penalty kick, the crowd was silent as the kicker lined up. As soon as he started his move towards the ball, one of the Rock players on the sideline and down near the kick, yelled "SHANK" really loud. The kick was good but it was a pretty embarrassing display of poor sportsmanship.

This brought back a conversation I had with someone who was at a Rock U-18 game a couple of months ago versus a touring team from England. On the last play of the game, with a penalty kick to decide it, the English kicker started his move towards the ball, and, surprise, someone (the person telling the story says it was a coach, but who knows for sure) screams to distract him. He made the kick. Same story, tons of swearing and bad sportsmanship. Pretty sure that team won't be stopping in Newfoundland anytime soon. It wouldn't surprise me if word gets around. Losing out on playing touring teams certainly won't help develop game in Newfoundland.

Summing up, it's a shame because the Rock is a really good team. Supremely talented. Maybe this coach is a rugby genius. Maybe off the field he's the nicest guy in the world. But, seriously, this guy needs to grow up and realize that his attitude isn't helping his team's reputation. Also, if you want to grow the game in Canada this isn't the proper blueprint. Who's going to take their kids to the game, to get them exposed to it early in life only have some lunatic set this example:

crying and whining when penalties go against his team
cheering when penalties go against the opposition
loudly accusing the ref of favouring one team
and all of this peppered with F words.

Pretty sad and pretty pathetic.

Alberta were full value for their win over the weekend. Their effort while less than spectacular over BC, was just enough to get them to the game vs Ontario, and while I had eyes on the BC vs Quebec game, I understand that AB earned it.

I had a laugh when the BCRU described the AB win over BC as an upset. Any of the BC, Ontario, Quebec or Alberta can win in a given year, so in my book there are no upsets, just good games. Quebec has a relatively young, very fast team, and if they stick together...look out.

Ontario and BC were inconsistent over the weekend, although BC was much better vs Quebec than they were vs AB.

In the Tier 2's BC was simply head and shoulders above everyone else. Their forwards were big and athletic, and they had speed in the backs. No one could answer their offload game.

In the U20 final BC started strongly, and took the lead. Ontario changed their defensive game plan and pressured the 9 / 10 axis of BC, effectively choking them off. BC couldn't recover and Ontario took the game in the end, despite a furious effort by BC to get the lead back. The leadership shown by the Ontario #15 was incredible. A cool steady head who kept the team focused and lead by example.

Over the past few weeks I have been out watching some club rugby(mens and u20). I have noticed that there is some absolutely raw talent that i believe could be playing for our country. I don't know how they recruit the players, but i think there needs to be way more scouts out to these games to look at the players, there is a lot of unreal talent.

I am adding this information to my blog. I looked up the tournament online and this is either a 2 day event with a more serious 7s tournament on the Saturday and a fun family 7s on Sunday or there may be some information incorrect. Kyal, if you get a chance can you verify that this is on the 17th and let me know what if anything is happening on the 18th of September as well. Thanks.

After some speculation about whether this team would start up this year - the Ontario Blues have added a U19 development team to it's program. Head coach Shaun Allen from McMaster U, assisted by Darrell Devine from Guelph U and Cam Mitchell also from McMaster.
This team fills a slight gap in the development year between 18 and 20 and hopefully will assist in honing the skills of some promising athlete's.

Canadian Football ShinesSpotlight on Rugby Sevens

Canadianfootball will return to its roots in 2011 by showcasing rugby during halftimeat select Canadian Football League (“CFL”) games. Canadian football developedfrom rugby; the Grey Cup, first presented in 1909, was the reward to recognizethe top amateur rugby football team in Canada.

SaskatchewanRoughriders CEO, Jim Hopson, and the Dog River Howlers Rugby Club were thecatalysts in featuring rugby with Canadian football. In 2010, the Howlers playedthe Saskatchewan Prairie Fire in an exhibition game before 30,000 enthusiasticfans during halftime of the Roughriders home game. Sevens rugby will takecentre stage during three CFL games in 2011.

OnJune 15, 2011, the Howlers will take on the Prairies Wolf Pack in Calgaryduring halftime of the Calgary Stampeders and BC Lions game.

TheNorth Saskatchewan Wolverines will play the Prairie Fire in Regina forprovincial bragging rights during halftime of game between the Roughriders andEdmonton Eskimos on June 17, 2011.

TheHowlers travel west to take on the BC Tyees on June 22, 2011, during halftimeof the BC Lions and Saskatchewan Roughriders. The Howlers line up will featureWaisale Serevi, originally of Fiji. Serevi has long been considered the ‘WayneGretzky’ of rugby sevens and will give fans a memorable experience.

TheHowlers are committed to assisting the growth of rugby sevens in Canada. “Wewould like to see sevens games played in every CFL city, featuring naturalprovincial rivalries, such as the North/South Saskatchewan game in Regina thisyear”, stated Karl Fix, president of the Dog River Howlers Rugby Club

RugbySevens, originating in Melrose, Scotland in 1883, features seven players on thefield per team; in contrast to the fifteen players per team in the traditionalgame. Played on the same size field as traditional rugby, the game demandshigh-speed athleticism. Rugby sevens is experiencing unprecedented growth. Thiscan be attributed to its recent inclusion in the Olympics, making its debut inBrazil in 2016.

Recently there has been a great deal of chatter in these forums concerning import players. That is, people not born in Canada, who haven't lived in Canada for 3 years. For many years I was a staunch believer in the "BC Premier Rugby for BC Players!" point of view that has ruled rugby in BC for years. After seeing the recent results of our Men's XV's team and our BC Bears, I'm not so sure anymore.

Are we in Canada, and BC in general, making a mistake by not following the lead of countries like the USA, Japan, Spain or Georgia who have opened the doors of their top leagues to foreign born players? These are countries who Canada used to manhandle, but are now creeping up to our IRB ranking or who have already passed us.

If your goal was to build a hockey program in Australia that could compete at a global level, you would be a fool to limit the number of Canadians, Americans, Russians or Swedes that wanted to play in your leagues. The hockey skills that we learn as children in Canada, are skills that are not taught at all in most "non traditional" hockey markets. Exposing the hockey players of Australia to those skills daily would improve their hockey skills.

Vancouver and Victoria are world class cities that attract people from all over the world. Some from countries that specialize in Rugby!!! Why do we limit our local players exposure to higher quality rugby, and expect our Nation to get better at Rugby?

What's happening in Rowerland? I've read on BCRugbyNews that they've asked to drop down and were denied. They weren't that strong in the first half either.

They do have a good junior contingent that should have filled in some holes.

Just watched a bit of Mt Royal vs U of A. Not very good but have to love the comments. They were suprised that U Vic didn't dominate Mac 19-0 sounds dominating to me. Suprised that Western beat UBC, guess the general feeling on the west coast is that we know nothing about the game of rugby in Ontario. I guess they think they should win every game by 50 points.

Restructure the Marshall in 2011 to have two divisions Premier and Provincial division, and then eliminate the Keenan/Jones and Bardon divisions. Each division would have 8 teams and the requirements to play in the two divisions would be different.

Marshall League will consist of two divisions of 8 teams:
Marshall Premiere League – Clubs to be invited
Aurora Barbarians, Stoney Creek Camels
Toronto Scottish, Brantford Harlequins
Markham Irish, Oakville Crusaders
Balmy Beach, London St George

Marshall Provincial League - Clubs to be invited
Peterborough Pagans, Brampton Beavers
Oshawa Vikings, Niagara Wasps
Barrie RFC, Waterloo County
Kingston Panthers, Sarnia Saints

Notice Ottawa clubs have no representation.
Makes sense. First Division of Toronto Rugby was a joke last year. At one time it was the hardest division in Canada to get promoted.

I came across an article earlier about an exhibition match between James Bay and the American Rugby Super League team San Francisco Golden Gate RFC. I'm surprised that I didn't see this game promoted on bcrugbynews.com. Arguably Canada's best rugby club versus a talented American club who competed in the RSL final last year deserves some sort of coverage I think.

Anyways, according to the SFGG twitter page the home team, San Francisco, came away with a 38-13 win over the Bays. I was fairly surprised to be honest but nonetheless I was glad to see these two teams organize this match as I would like to see more matches between the top Canadian and American clubs.

Hopefully San Francisco GG make a trip out to the Island next year to play James Bay in what I'm sure would be an exciting and well attended rematch.
