I agree. Very disappointing and I also reffed and played in it as well. I think it is harder to win the Barb Cup than one of the OFSAA's. Due to the fact all the best schools from AAA and AA are there at that age group.

Very disappointing. I played in this tournamaent and reffed more than one hundred games in it and was very sorry to see it be cancelled but I think there was unfortunately no alternative.

Below was the response to the article that was written above.

Organizers respond to cancellation of Barbarian Cup
York Region athletic coordinator says circumstances did not allow for rugby tourney to be rescheduled at a later date

By Intelligencer Staff

This week, Bay of Quinte rugby players and coaches from Moira, Quinte and Trenton High were severely disappointed when the 2011 Barbarian Cup Ontario junior rugby championships at Fletcher's Fields in Markham were cancelled at the last minute due to miserable playing conditions there.

At least one coach, Duane Lambert at Moira, wondered why organizers from the York Region Athletic Association did not have a backup plan to move the games elsewhere in case of such a situation arising.

On Thursday, YRAA athletic coordinator Steve Shantz responded with an email to The Intelligencer. It is printed below in its entirety:

"Thanks for your interest in, and support of the Barbarian Cup.

"The YRAA assumed the Barbarian Cup in 2007 when the Ontario Rugby Union, for various reasons decided that they could no longer host the event. Rather than see the longest-running high school rugby tournament in the province cease to exist, the organizing committee with the support of the YRAA took on this event, a responsibility that we take very seriously.

"As such, the decision to cancel this year's 36-team championship was not an easy one to make nor was it made lightly.

"The decision to close Fletcher's Fields was made just after 7 p.m. last Saturday and was communicated to me by John Twomey, the president of Fletcher's Fields. If you would like more detail regarding the decision to close the fields you should speak to John. "In turn I communicated with the other members of the organizing committee, and then sent an e-mail to all the coaches, posted the cancellation on the http://www.barbariancup.ca website and began calling each of the coaches to personally relay the information and our disappointment on having to cancel the tournament.

"A number of people have asked why we would not reschedule the tournament at a later date. Rescheduling or relocating a tournament of 36 high school teams is not practical or appropriate within an educational setting.

"Even as the date of the tournament currently stands on the first Sunday in June and the following Monday, some teams are not permitted to attend as the dates fall within the moratorium on games and field trips established by boards of education as students begin summative evaluations and exams.

"Moving the date even closer to the end of the year would only increase the number of teams unable to attend and defeat the purpose of the tournament as a provincial championship. Even if the reschedule were possible and appropriate, which it isn't, there would also be the practical issues of rescheduling. These include but are not limited to; securing a facility, Fletchers or several others capable of hosting and event containing three draws and 36 teams; confirming the referees needed to officiate that number of games; obtaining approval from our insurer.

"Once this is done we would need to communicate to the teams and in-turn would have to confirm they could field a team; re-obtaining certificates of insurance; re-book transportation; re-confirm their interest in attending etcetera, etcetera.

"This has been an exceptional year. In 20 years I can't recall a spring that even approaches the weather that has closed so many of our fields for so long this spring.

"I know this explanation may not satisfy some rugby enthusiasts, but I hope it explains the reasons behind our decision to cancel this year's Barbarian Cup."

Yours in education through sport,

Steve Shantz

Tournament cancellation puts damper on Trojan rugby season
2011 Barbarian Cup called off due to terrible field conditions in Markham

By Paul Svoboda

A resurgent rugby season at Moira Secondary School has ended on a sour note for the Trojans junior boys team.

The Bay of Quinte champions were set to make their first-ever appearance at the 2011 Barbarian Cup at Fletcher's Fields in Markham Sunday and Monday before tournament organizers pulled the plug on the event — at the last minute — due to miserable playing conditions on the rain-soaked pitches north of Toronto.

The Barbarian Cup, which serves as the unofficial provincial championships for junior boys and girls and bantam boys, was to mark its 50th anniversary. Since 2008, the event has been administered by the York Region Athletic Association.

"It sucks," said Moira coach Duane Lambert. "Our kids were devastated. The kids were so excited and were looking forward to it. That was one of our goals when we started training indoors in February.

"Now, it's gone."

Fran Mason of Rugby Ontario said unseasonably wet weather has played havoc with the pitches at Fletcher's Fields this year.

"What traditionally happens is that Fletcher's Fields has so many tournaments and it seems to have its own climate zone," said Mason. "It can be sunny everywhere else and raining there. That's sometimes what happens. And, it has very poor drainage.

"Unfortunately with Fletcher's Fields, that seems to be a big problem."

Lambert didn't debate the fact that wet weather this spring has rendered some rugby fields around the province unplayable, but he wondered why Barbarian Cup organizers didn't have a backup plan. He said other fields may have been lined up in case of emergency.

"There should have been a contingency plan," said Lambert.

A statement explaining the cancellation of the tournament on the Barbarian Cup website said:

"The tournament has been cancelled as the result of excessive rain on Saturday, June 4 which combined with the games that were played caused the closure of Fletcher's Fields.

"With schools starting summative evaluations and exams quickly approaching, the tournament will not be rescheduled this year. We hope to see everybody back next year."

Lambert said organizers should've done everything possible to find a solution, rather than just shut down the event.

"Hold it after exams," he said. "Poll the schools and find out if it's feasible. Exhaust all avenues until you just can it."

Some local coaches say Barbarian Cup officials should consider holding the tournament in different locations, or at least alternating between new venues and Fletcher's Fields on a year-by-year basis. Belleville's M.A. Sills Park played host to the OFSAA AA boys tournament last week.

Meanwhile, Trojans weren't the only Bay of Quinte rugby program affected by the tournament cancellation. Both the Quinte Saints and Trenton Tigers were sending their junior girls and Grade 9 boys teams to the all-Ontario rugby festival.

Since 2000, Bay of Quinte teams have won six Barbarian Cup titles — Centennial, junior boys, 2003; Bayside, junior girls, 2005; Centennial, junior girls, 2007; Trenton High, junior boys, 2008, and junior girls, 2009; and Quinte, junior girls, 2010.

All of you parents and so called rugby fans posting on this blog naming names and making accusations about families and kids that you do not know should be ashamed of yourselves! I live in Abbotsford and have two sons that just started playing rugby, and I took them to see a rugby game at Rotary Stadium on Thursday- this just happened to be the Shawnigan v. Earl Marriot game.

I would like to make it very clear to all of you that this game was a disgrace to Rugby- not because of the game being played on the field but because of the disrespect and vulgarity that the non-Shawnigan teams and parents in the bleachers possessed. It was very obvious that they were only there watching to be disrespectful. Any school (yes coaches and parents I am talking about you standing there and encouraging it) that promotes and encourages their kids to cheer when a member of another team (Shawnigan) is slow to get up does not know or promote the spirit of rugby.

In my opinion as a spectator Shawnigan players and supporters came out on top in more ways than one, because they held their heads high and did not drop to the low level of those around them. A few of the Shawnigan players after the game actually took a moment in the parking lot to talk to my kids and encourage them to continue playing the game- a vast difference to the SMU boy that knocked my 6 year old over with his bag while swearing with his buddies!

This forum has taken an issue between school staff and administration and turned it into a war that does nothing but hurt the game and the Shawnigan boys themselves (not the coaches or school), and as a result makes your own children and yourselves look like jealous fools.

New rules are great I only wish they could have occurred civilly.

I'm continually impressed that the hinterlands between Barrie and Peterborough are still so wonderful at rugby! I come from that region, and even we 'minnows' of the region do well when we ventured out of it for tournaments, etc. Helps to play against the big boys year in, year out, and have a fair number of 'old boys' stay around and coach. Top work!

Wow Paladin, of all the posts on this topic that one has to be the biggest reach, if you think apartheid had anything to do with rugby it might be time to get your history from more then just movies. But lets stick with your analogy for a second, the whole and entire premise of the movie and what Mandela was trying to accomplish was based on being the better man and taking the high road not lowering yourself to the opposition's standards.... OB, CG & EM all made their point this spring we get that, and SLS are definitely going to have to rethink the way they conduct business, but that needs to be worked out by the adults (I use this term lightly) and really should never effect the players behaviour on any level. I cannot imagine how disappointed I would be if my child didn't front up and take his loses like a man...

I also read the book. White Rugby was The Symbol of
Apartheid! Both were about standing for something.
That's a lesson I would want my child to learn.
That does not make MA or TL or EA or AR Mandela
It just makes them Men of Principle.

"What other school makes Rugby mandatory in grade 8,9,10?
What other school trains 2hrs 5 days a week during the season and also a considerable amount in the off-season?"

Those are things I'd have no problem with if the public schools were allowed to do it also and I think one of the positive things that happens at Shawnigan, building the rugby culture we all talk about.

Working hard to achieve results is vastly different from importing them.

Below is the article in today's Belleville newspaper. Great game and both sides well coached. The touch judge who made the call is a former panel Ontario ref. Right call and I'm sure the player feels bad about what happened. Trenton would have made the convert. The kicker just missed a 50m pk in the match that was just short of the posts.

No three-peat for Tigers

OFSAA AA boys rugby final ends in controversial 6-0 win for Barrie Central

By Paul Svoboda

There would be no provincial three-peat for the Trenton Tigers at the 2011 OFSAA AA boys rugby championships which wrapped up Saturday at M.A. Sills Park.

The two-time defending Ontario champions dropped a controversial 6-0 decision to Barrie Central in a gold medal final that ended badly for the local representatives.

Bryon Boville posted Barrie Central to its 6-0 lead on a pair of penalty kicks. Late in the game, with virtually no time left on the clock, Trenton centre Dillion King broke over the goal-line for a try. With a convert, Tigers would claim their third straight OFSAA crown.

Not so fast.

A punch thrown by a Trenton player behind the play was witnessed by one of the empowered touch judges who reported the incident to the referee. After a conference among the three officials the try was wiped out.

Game over.

The controversial finish marred a contest that many observers had been eagerly anticipating, pitting the perennial OFSAA AA powerhouse Tigers against a strong Barrie Central team that finished third in the province at the AAA level last season before dropping down one rung on the rankings ladder due to declining enrollment.

Both teams were 3-and-0 coming into the final.

In the bronze medal match that preceded the championship tilt, Peterborough's Thomas A. Stewart defeated Brock High 15-3.

This year's all-Ontario Final Four featured three teams from the COSSA region: Trenton, TAS and Brock.

WRONG! There are many things is Life more important than
the game of Rugby.
A few years back no country in the rugby world
would play South Africa. Changes were made and
rugby is better for it. You saw the movie?
When one school CHEATS to Win then they need
to be called on it.
Three of the Top 4 rugby schools in BC did that!

By the sounds of it, if a punch had been thrown, the result should have been no try and a 6-0 win for Barrie because the try should have been disallowed at the penalty area
. Am I reading your post correctly?

I heard there was a bit of a mishap in the gold medal game. Trenton scored with no time left on the clock, to bring the score to 5-6 for barrie, with the convert trenton could have won, but a touch judge said a punch was thrown about 50meters back. Do you think it was the right call? Or should the penalty been put on after the try and convert?

The game is the most important thing full stop!! Once the opening kick-off has been taken nothing else matters, politics especially. The only thing more important then the honour in which the game is played, is the honour in how we conduct ourselves after the game is over, that is what separates us from every other sport and makes rugby special. It is every coach’s responsibility to instil those values into their players win or lose; we are men and our actions should reflect that. If the events took place as described above then shame on everyone involved and very disappointing to say the least. You have lowered yourself more then the people you have condemned.....

What a terrible marketing event for Canadian Rugby.

We have a highschool that cheats to win a highschool championship. We have highschool rugby opponents that now display poor sportsmanship at the provincial tournament.

Thank you BC Highschool Athletics Association . Thank you BC Highschool Rugby. Thanks to Rugby Canada for your role in all of this. Thank you Headmaster Dave Robertson for creating this situation in the first place.

Rugby in Canada once again looks terrible

knower said:
My question has been answered! The second best HS team in
BC NEVER crossed the Yankee Try Line. The Oak Bay team played hard but where whipped like dogs. The "Best Team
Money Can Buy" WON by over 40 points. When the Yankees received their 2011 Banner other schools just turned their
backs and walked out of the stadium. A hollow victory!
What I predicted happened. That's why I'm Knower!

Wow that is so sad that a coach would encourage and condone such poor behavior from his team. If I was a parent I would not let my child play and would find another school for him to attend where sportsmanship was valued and instilled.

Again I will ask if SLS is breaking BCSS rules why are they not fined or barred from playing in the championship?

They were fined for playing a touring side when not rugby season, if they have broken any other rules why hasn't it been delt with?

Let the coaches/schools egos remain at the BCSS governing body and leave the players out of it.
