Tournament cancellation puts damper on Trojan rugby season
2011 Barbarian Cup called off due to terrible field conditions in Markham

By Paul Svoboda

A resurgent rugby season at Moira Secondary School has ended on a sour note for the Trojans junior boys team.

The Bay of Quinte champions were set to make their first-ever appearance at the 2011 Barbarian Cup at Fletcher's Fields in Markham Sunday and Monday before tournament organizers pulled the plug on the event — at the last minute — due to miserable playing conditions on the rain-soaked pitches north of Toronto.

The Barbarian Cup, which serves as the unofficial provincial championships for junior boys and girls and bantam boys, was to mark its 50th anniversary. Since 2008, the event has been administered by the York Region Athletic Association.

"It sucks," said Moira coach Duane Lambert. "Our kids were devastated. The kids were so excited and were looking forward to it. That was one of our goals when we started training indoors in February.

"Now, it's gone."

Fran Mason of Rugby Ontario said unseasonably wet weather has played havoc with the pitches at Fletcher's Fields this year.

"What traditionally happens is that Fletcher's Fields has so many tournaments and it seems to have its own climate zone," said Mason. "It can be sunny everywhere else and raining there. That's sometimes what happens. And, it has very poor drainage.

"Unfortunately with Fletcher's Fields, that seems to be a big problem."

Lambert didn't debate the fact that wet weather this spring has rendered some rugby fields around the province unplayable, but he wondered why Barbarian Cup organizers didn't have a backup plan. He said other fields may have been lined up in case of emergency.

"There should have been a contingency plan," said Lambert.

A statement explaining the cancellation of the tournament on the Barbarian Cup website said:

"The tournament has been cancelled as the result of excessive rain on Saturday, June 4 which combined with the games that were played caused the closure of Fletcher's Fields.

"With schools starting summative evaluations and exams quickly approaching, the tournament will not be rescheduled this year. We hope to see everybody back next year."

Lambert said organizers should've done everything possible to find a solution, rather than just shut down the event.

"Hold it after exams," he said. "Poll the schools and find out if it's feasible. Exhaust all avenues until you just can it."

Some local coaches say Barbarian Cup officials should consider holding the tournament in different locations, or at least alternating between new venues and Fletcher's Fields on a year-by-year basis. Belleville's M.A. Sills Park played host to the OFSAA AA boys tournament last week.

Meanwhile, Trojans weren't the only Bay of Quinte rugby program affected by the tournament cancellation. Both the Quinte Saints and Trenton Tigers were sending their junior girls and Grade 9 boys teams to the all-Ontario rugby festival.

Since 2000, Bay of Quinte teams have won six Barbarian Cup titles — Centennial, junior boys, 2003; Bayside, junior girls, 2005; Centennial, junior girls, 2007; Trenton High, junior boys, 2008, and junior girls, 2009; and Quinte, junior girls, 2010.

I heard there was a bit of a mishap in the gold medal game. Trenton scored with no time left on the clock, to bring the score to 5-6 for barrie, with the convert trenton could have won, but a touch judge said a punch was thrown about 50meters back. Do you think it was the right call? Or should the penalty been put on after the try and convert?

Oak bay and St Michaels Plan on boycotting Shawnigan lake school.

they are going to refuse to play rugby against shawnigan claiming shawnigan has an unfair advantage. In my opinion this sounds like a coach(s) resenting the the standard of rugby that shawnigan has set at the high school level.

when will these coaches stop blaming other schools for their inadequacy to create strong programs.

this level of discrimination sets a precident that I hope is retracted

Again this tournament is being run the same day as the Red Hot but at much cheaper entry fee.

Today was possibly the best tournament held in a while, about 8 of the top 15 teams in ontario were head to head. Not sure of any results but it had teams like Oakville, Lorne Park, Streetsville, Pine Ridge, Trenton, Dunbarton, Medway and few others. If anyone has results, please post them!

Very interesting that last year's OFSAA AAA winner does not have a boy's senior team this year. No coaching. Rumour has it that anybody left over from last year's team and wanted to play rugby is now at IE Weldon SS and now playing there. I wonder if any transfer rules came into play for that? This is all but just a rumour that I heard.

Former Belleville Centennial SS high school teacher and rugby coach Bob Burnett passed away yesterday in Peterborough from an apparent heart attack. He was watching his granddaughter play rugby for Quinte SS at the COSSA “AA” finals at Trent University where the Saints won the junior girl’s title.
Burnett was instrumental in helping start rugby at Centennial in the late 1970’s winning several Bay of Quinte titles in junior and senior boy’s.
Over the years he has been a frequent spectator at the Belleville Bulldogs RFC games.
He will be missed by all his former players, friends and family

Saw in the Vancouver Sun this morning that the provincial gov't is going to axe the provincial grant to BC School sports. According to the article the "Big 3 - Football, Basketball and Volleyball" will probably survive while other programs and competitions, including rugby, will be cut.

I find it curious that the gov't would take this route as money in sports saves money down the road in other social or health programs (google that on the internet you'll find examples...) That being said, this is going to go ahead by the look of it.

From an activist standpoint, this would be a good time to contact your MLA to voice your concerns (assuming of course that you think this is a bonehead move). It may also be another moment when rugby needs it's alumni to step forward.

Read this on BCrugby news

"In case you have not heard yet, all junior & senior high school rugby will be played in the spring only"

With most high schools sporting only one rugby coach how do they think they can pull this off. As I see it the coach/school will only concentrate in one of the two leagues. The strength of having the season seperate is to not over burden programs that rely on only a few people to run their whole program. If you look down the road any program that runs just a senior team without a junior team with be without any program in three years.

Idiots all of them.

Is it right that only 6 schools have made the semis in the last four tournaments and 2 or those have been there every year. Good for them but it doesn't speak well for depth in the school game.
