Canada just beat France in their first games of the tourney. Great start for the boys, especially with PM still recovering from injury and unavailable. This French side is basically the same side that has wracked up 51 series pts. in the previous events so it is definately not an experimental or developmental side.

Kenya rolled the Aussies so in the same group so it is definately a day of upsets for pool D

Why is Canada playing in Toronto on a Friday? Jays play the Phillies that night at the Rogers Center. If Halliday is pitching there will be a huge walk up crowd which will hurt the Rugby!

Looks like JC will be spending another 2 years in France. Good on him, he is often vilified for his brushes with the law but clearly AC sees value in having him in the lineup, even if it is only 2/3 of year.

I would love to write positive stuff on here but there is so little positive stuff going on these days!!! Foreign coaches, terrible schedules(bc league), bad national results. lack of international games. Lack of growth everywhere.

What has happened to the much talked about residential U20 program in Victoria? From where I sit it appears that no progress has been made. Canada fired John Tait to bring in the expert from Alberta and to this this date nothing has been achieved. Rick Bourne and Graham Brown inform us of the No Excuses pharse. Does this fall in place with no players, no program so you have no excuses? Really what has been done?. This should be the major pathway to the men’s national 15’s and 7’s teams. Tim Murdy did a better job and he did it for free. Merry Christmas.

Of course we've all heard of the troubles at Penn state. I entered into a discussion the other day on the whole issue of culpability. Since I'm presuming that most of you on this forum are involved in club rugby either as a player, coach, on the executive or all of the above, I thought that you'd all be the best to look for clarity on the underlying issue(s).
The discussion I was having the other day revolved around "how high up" and "who was responsible for what" (insofar as alerting authorities were concerned.)
For the record, I stated that going to the A.D. wasn't good enough for Paterno and that if nothing was done by his "employers", then it was inevitably his responsibility to contact the proper authorities, whether it be child services, or the police.
Thoughts ladies and gentlemen? I believe this does have some relevance in our community.

Rugby is an amateur game in Canada. It is a professional game in a little more than half a dozen countries. It is unrealistic to expect a team that represents an amateur system will compete with teams that represent various professional systems. I always get a chuckle from the forums on this website, no matter what the topic of discussion. Impassioned cries to stop saying mean interweb things about the players. Bizarre factually-challenged pronouncements on all manner of subjects related to the game. Using the term "we" when referring to the performance of the men's team by fanboys is a good one too. Like it's you and Pritchard, Monro and Van Der Merwe, all working together to accomplish something on behalf of all Canadians. Rubbish. Rugby is a tremendous game. It offers a great opportunity for particpation in a competitive activity, and I'm happy that TSN carried broadcasts of WC games this year. Most of the kids I coach have never seen high calibre rugby, so it represents a tremendous development. But the idea that those twenty-some guys who went to NZ and their coaches have anything to do with the game as it's played where I am is ridiculous. $1300 for fifteen-year-olds to play in our National Festival while rugby Canada sends twenty-some guys who are striving to get overseas to play is ridiculous. Dan Baugh doing much for the kids in Edmonton these days?

For sometime whether it has been formal or informal policy, the SNMT has been based out of Victoria. The history of this can be traced back most likely to the days of the Pacific Pride. The thought being centralizing players would improve Canada's performance internationally.

In 2003 Canada was ranked 13 in the world. Two World Cups later and 8 years and Canada is still ranked 13 in the world and appears to be no better in relation to the rest of world.

It would appear this practice has not been a success as it is currently implemented.

Why does this practice persist?

One casualty of this practice has been the quality of rugby in BC. While 2 or 3 teams have great quality of play due in most part to them being comprised of the SNMT players and hopefuls the quality and standard of play has not generally increased or is any better than it has been in the past.

Does Canada even look at what the WINNING nations are doing? How does choosing eight players from the recent RWC squad help our future in 7s? They are not the same game. I'll admit players in the 15s squad should be 7s players... but they should never have gone to the 15s WC.

If Canada wants a chance in 7s (Which I believe we have a better shot in 7s than we do in 15s long term) then they need to start NOW. Using the same players for 7s and 15s if an excellent way to reduce your playing pool, burn out your players and play an outdated game.
What was the point of the sevens camps held throughout the WC then?

I saw it posted in Planet Rugby but there was no link cited.

It would be the current four teams (Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, Japan) plus Canada and USA.

Let's face it, networks have a pretty hard time justifying coverage of 15's rugby in Canada. The nature of the game with non-stop action means very little room to insert advertising and hterefore very difficult sell it to potential sponsors. I think TSN did a great job covering the World Cup and I think they were rewarded with a better than anticipated audience. It might be a good thing to remind them of that so their powers that be are eager to continue and see the value in offering more. So if you were one of the hundreds of thousands of viewers, take the time to write them a letter or send them an email and let them know, TSN Audience Relations audiencerelations@tsn.ca or call them at 416-384-7660
The more encouragement the better.

I don't want to wait until we are ranked just in the top 30 rugby nations in the world and the only top 30 country without a pro rugby league (like Basketball prior to the forming of the National Basketball League).

We are a rich country! We can get this done. The response to rugby from this year's world cup shows that there is demand for the game in Canada. Solution expand the Canadian Rugby Championship to include 10 home games to sell season's tickets and test market for expansion.
