Given what has happened with the NSWT 7's program in the last year, I think it might be fitting to review what has and is being done to get this program to where it is, in order to give some credit where it is due. Most of the people who have brought these events together are unknown to me, so please name names if you are aware of the instigators. Other events, that I am unaware of, may also have contributed. Please feel free to add to my list.

1) I believe the single biggest contributor to our current success has been the instigation of rugby at the CIS level. More than any other event, this opportunity to play rugby at the university level has inspired a lot of girls to pick up the sport at high school. We would not be where we are today without this advent. With the exception of 2-3 of our current long list of 24, nearly all the current players are currently playing or graduated from the CIS system. They include several CIS MVP's, and Rookie of the Year's, as well as several conferance MVP's and Rookies of the Year's.

2) Carding. Without it we would have players being sucked dry like a prune. Many could not afford to pay and play and would be lost. Note that while this does not make the NSWT professional, that 2 other teams (Holland and the USA) are now also giving their players renumeration and are refering to their players as professionals.

3)Own The Podium. Since OTP agreed to sponsor the NSWT, something has changed about the way these women are approaching the game. It is more than just the money ( which has allowed them to travel several times at no cost).
It is as though the ladies are responding ,just as our winter athletes did in Vancouver, to the vote of confidence that OTP has inspired. ie YES, WE ARE CONTENDERS AND CAN STAND ON THAT PODIUM.

4) Centralizing. While this has not happened yet, there is no question for me that this event will take us to the next level. For better or worse, this has already had the effect of shaking some of the girls out of the system who were not prepared to give 100% to the program. ie my career or significant other comes first. The top 24 ladies are moving to Victoria for 5 monthes each year and they have voted with their feet what will be their priority. The fact that there will be 24 of our best women in one location will not only allow for training together, but every week if they wish they can scrimage by dividing into 3 teams knowing that the bottom 12 are almost as competitve as the top 12 (see artical from Scrum Queens)

5) Coaching, for what ever reason the ladies are responding to Tait and his staff. There is synergy going on here. I believe OTB now allows for some reasonable renumeration for staff. I hope that is the case because there is nothing worse than a coach being distracted by his personal finances at this level.

Did I miss anything?

By John Birch

In 2011, 91 Nations, around 30 tournaments, and over 400 internationals were played making it by far, the busiest year for women’s 7s rugby there has ever been. And not only was more rugby played, the game continued to expand its horizons with three countries playing their first internationals - Cameroon, New Caledonia, and Slovakia. In addition the appearance of club teams and unofficial selections from countries as diverse as El Salvador, Cuba, Guatemala, Shajah, Dubai and Kuwait showed that the international game has not finished growing.

Four teams were unbeaten through the year – Fiji, Jamaica, Tunisia, and Ukraine - though only Ukraine played in more than one tournament, completing their apparently unstoppable journey to top table of European sevens. Overall Ukraine won ten games out of ten and, since they first started playing in 2009, have played 25 internationals and lost just two. It’s a remarkable performance – but how will they do in the Top 12 next year?

Though they only played in one tournament, Fiji’s return to international rugby was impressive. After three years away they totally dominated the Pacific Games, brushing aside teams like Samoa and Papua New Guinea – a feat that seemed all the more impressive when PNG (who Fiji dismissed 26-0) went on to beat Asian Champions China in the final of the Asia Pacific Sevens barely three weeks later. The Pacific could be the sleeping giant of women’s sevens.

However, the real giant in 2011 was Canada (pictured below). Four tournaments, four wins – and all against the cream of women’s international rugby. They only slipped up in one game – against USA in the opening round of the Las Vegas sevens in February – but it is a mark of the way the Canadians grew over the year that the 5-7 loss to their southern rivals in February became a 36-0 win against the same opponents ten months later in Dubai. In between these tournaments, Canada also picked up the Hong Kong and Amsterdam Sevens – a unprecedented clean sweep of women’s sevens four “majors”.

What is even more impressive about Canada is that their development squad – the Maple Leafs – were also a match for many full international squads. With players as young as 16, this next generation of Canadian rugby finished 6th in Las Vegas, went on to win the NACRA championship, before beating France in the Dubai Invitational on their way to runners-up spot.

Canada were also the only international team to beat England in 2011. After experimenting in club sevens tournaments, England emerged on the international scene with an impressive performance to win the European Top 12 before an even more remarkable performance in Dubai, where their young side – with several “stars” missing – reached a final few expected them to reach, beating world champions Australia on the way. Perhaps a full strength England might be the only team who could stop Canada dominating 2012?

Elsewhere in the world, Brazil continued to be well ahead of everyone else in South America – they did concede two tries this year (both to Argentina) on their way to the title, which is one worse than in 2010 - but their spring tour of Europe showed they still have a long way to go to compete with the major teams elsewhere in the world. However their remarkable 17-12 win over the Kiwi/USA combination at the Rome Sevens showed what they are capable of.

The 2013 World Cup also began with the first eliminations taking place in Africa. Only the top four teams in each of the two CAR tournaments will be invited to compete in the continent’s qualification tournament next year. So for teams such as Egypt, Nigeria, Botswana and Zambia the main target is already the 2016 Olympics. In practice the leading teams in contention for places in Moscow would seem to be South Africa, Uganda, Kenya and Tunisia. However, funding remains a critical problem for most of Africa – Uganda very nearly had to withdraw from the Africa (South) tournament (and with it the World Cup), while Nigeria were unable to make the Africa (North) event.

Lack of money is a recurring problem that creates islands of rugby which teams cannot break out of. No Caribbean team has ever played outside the Caribbean, which is why the visits of USA and Canadian development teams is so important. Brazil aside, no South American team has ever left South America, and African and Pacific national sides rarely get to play anyone other than near neighbours. It is why world cups are important as it gives everyone a chance to compete, with the leading nations getting a chance to taste the game in a worldwide level, feeding back that experience to their regions.

European teams, with over a third of the world’s women’s rugby playing nations relatively nearby, and with excellent transport links, probably suffers from this problem least. 33 nations took part in the continent’s divisional championship. Poland won Division 3, to the surprise of many, not least hosts and clear pre-tournament favourites Hungary who missed out on promotion again. Ukraine, as noted above, continued their rise by winning Division 2 – but will be joined at the top of European sevens next season by Switzerland, who were almost as dominant. In fact next season promises to be an exciting one for Europe’s leading sevens teams as their championship will be decided over two tournaments instead of one – a “tour” that may well expand to match that of Europe’s men’s sevens if this proves to be successful. Only three European teams declined invitations to take part – Scotland, Ireland and Wales – though the latter only withdrew at the last minute, and may reappear for the continent’s World Cup qualification series in 2012.

There was much more to European Sevens than the official tournaments, however. From the Emerging Nations tournament in Zanka, Hungary, in April to the Prague Sevens in August, and finally Piotrowice Nyskie (Poland) Sevens in September, it was rare that a weekend went by without international sevens being played somewhere on the continent. As well as the massive Amsterdam Sevens, the growing Rome Sevens attracted players and teams from four continents, and the ScrumQueens Sevens saw England play their first ever (and still only) home international when the beat Sweden by 27-0.

Similarly busy is Asia. Their season opened in Shanghai in August, and included four other major tournaments before the end of the year – and will continue up to the Hong Kong sevens next year. China and Kazakhstan continued to dominate, with China regaining the upper hand in 2011 after the Kazakhs had taken the major titles in 2010.

Looking ahead, as the World Cup and then the Olympics get closer, the pace of women’s sevens can only increase. 2011 may have been the busiest year ever, but it is a record that it is unlikely to keep for long – not least because 2012 will also see World Cup qualification tournaments across the globe. Details about the African and European qualification processes have already been announced.

The final headline from 2011 was the appearance of women’s rugby’s first professional players when The Netherlands became the first country to create a full-funded sevens squad in September – and within three months they had lifted their first title in Dubai. USA have announced that they will follow suit in early 2012 - and New Zealand may be returning to international sevens shortly, following the appointment of their first national coach dedicated to women’s sevens. They may find that the game has moved on a long way since 2009!

The 91 international women’s sevens playing nations:

Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Barbados, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Botswana, Brazil, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Canada, Cayman Is, Chile, China, Columbia, Cook Is, Croatia, Czech Rep, Denmark, Egypt, England, Fiji, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Guadeloupe, Guam, Guyana, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Korea, Laos, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Moldova, Morocco, Netherlands, New Caledonia, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Rwanda, Samoa, Senegal, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, St Lucia, St Vincent, Sweden, Switzerland, Tahiti, Taiwan, Thailand, Tonga, Trinidad & Tobago, Tunisia, Uganda, Ukraine, Uruguay, USA, Venezuela, Zambia, Zimbabwe

The women played really quite well against the Yanks yesterday in what was more of a one-sided affair than the score would suggest. They had two early tries denied for what was the 'flattest' of passes - didn't look forward from where I was, but the ref was close in both. They gave away one early from a mis-hit 22m drop, but dominated most aspects of the game. I thought the US would target and expose Landry's size, but she did very well and showed her worth in attack. On that note, the team showed a great mix of ball-in-hand attack from both backs and forwards, and even showed they could do the 'necessary' stuff such as dealing with a period of kicking tennis to pin the Yanks back, from which they launched a nice counter attack for a try.

I didn't stick around for the player of the match presentations, but Kish and Marchak were immense and either could have got it.

England looked really good, though the side was full of newbies. I reckon it'll be a well-fought match on Tuesday. I found it interesting that this current England team don't go as wide as their World Cup squad did, though the talent is here ... I pity anyone who has to cover Kat Merchant. Wheels, agility and a nasty hand-off.

The women's (and men's) carding list is posted on the Sport Canada website. http://www.pch.gc.ca/pgm/sc/pgm/APAA-eng.pdf
Excellent to see the women are getting lots of funding (assuming that's from OTP). However, I have a serious gripe with the first five names on the list - THEY ARE RETIRED! $45,000!!! Isn't Gallo actually on RC payroll now?! And the sixth name hasn't played since pre-NWL 2010 - and still hasn't been cleared for contact! Does anyone else see a problem with this? There are second rows and front rows out there who can't get the carding they deserve because they are only 2 second rows carded and 2 props carded since the new 7s/15s split, but yet we have $45k to throw around to athletes who won't slip on the Canadian jersey again?!?!
Someone help me understand this!!

A meeting is schedualed this weekend in Toronto for about 20 people to discuss the future of the NSWT. Anyone know who is going? I am aware of 4-5 players as well as 3-4 CIS Head Coaches. My hope is that they will address the following questions:

1) should there be seperate 7's and 15's coaches?

2) should 7's players also be expected to play 15's if we are expected to try to own the podium?

3) without a good 7's structure in Canada, should we bring the best 20-25 7's players into one location so that they can practice/play against each other regularly?

4)should the players have input into their coaches evaluations?

Meanwhile back home it seems the Sevens captain has been meeting with his Player Rep in attempts to work out a package for his team during the time they are offshore.

Most of the discussion seems to have been centered about the desire to have a similar ‘package’ as the fifteens team has when they are away from Canadian shores.

On the surface of things this seems quite reasonable although one has to wonder why this initiative must be undertaken by the captain of the team and not his representative in the first place.

Give the 7's team a per diem

Late Update – word from Victoria late on Friday seems to indicate that the fired-rehired national assistant coach is to take charge of the NSWT Sevens program for the upcoming tournament at Las Vegas in the New Year.

Yet again, no announcement from RC. What happened to KD and JL?

This is restructuring at it's finest. RB and GB spin that wheel

With 15's sidetracked for the next 2-3 years and our focus returning to 7's what will our program look like ?

In terms of players, who is stepping down and who wants to step up? I think Kish and Zussman are interested in stepping up. Would Moise be interested?

What about coaching? I think our 15's coaches are what we will get. If so is that best for the team.

Will carding shrink to 15 rather than 22 cards. The girls are already forwarned that this cycle will terminate in Oct and that some might be sharing a card.

Given their is no active league of any sort for 7's, will RC and the coaches finally have the guts to centralize the team in on location? If we do this with our top 28-30 players then we can at least divide up into 4 teams and play against each other regularly.

Someone needs to be held accountable for canceling the NZ tour. I think Canada could have benefited from more games against opposition other than the USA. Will they be held accountable, probably not. We need a system in place where not only is it the Board who holds Rugby Canada accountable but also the other funding providers such as the IRB, Sport Canada and Own the Podium. Sport Canada needs to more active in monitoring the performances of the national sports associations and powers to increase and reduce funding based on expected performance. We may also want a system in place that more funding for athletes goes directly to the athletes themselves rather than directly to the Sport Association.

"We missed a few key scrums and key lineouts and that really made a difference. We couldn't really build anything and then France snuck in a couple of late tries. . ."
REALLY? Was it all down to the pack of forwards? I did not see that! I saw a pack that worked & worked and a set of backs who were playing the wrong game, fastest players did not touch the ball, who's decision is that? I watched the game live, JL talk about throw your forwards under the bus, you have a great squad, your decisions need to be looked at! Bash up with the centre's demand the forwards run at other forwards you kill the game, Russell Mervin Flo Jaques Kish Gibbs are all runners let them loose, Moyse Waters Phillips Patser let them run
All this talk about the BC scrum half & alberta scrum half makes me sick, they are both good, both play different games for this one (France) the Alberta player would have been a better choice, she lit up the CanAm's and she lit up the 5 mins she was on against France

The NSWT will be leaving in just 2 days for World Cup

I want to know peoples thoughts on how they think the women will do.

I personal think that the team that is going to this world cup is the strongest & fittest team to ever attend the world cup for Canada. If these women cannot finish this time around, then the NSWT program have a looooong way to go before they ever come this close to having such a team again. I honestly believe that Canada will in fact bring the cup home & they will finish!

Seems from the attached article that apparently there is one less spot available for the 2010 WRC in London. My opinion only but if I'm one of the girls (in the back three) currently committing myself to the program I'd be pissed. We all know that these kind of things go on (I do not subscribe to these kind of deals), but you would think that someone would have the common sense to keep this to themselves. The article is courtesy The Globe and Mail:

WINTERBERG, GERMANY - The women's national rugby team is holding a spot for Heather Moyse heading into the 2010 World Cup, and considering her remarkable strength and physical conditioning, well, is there any way at 37 she could hang on long enough to represent Canada in rugby sevens when it makes it debut in the Summer Olympics in 2016?

"The only time I think about it is when I think, why is not in 2012 instead of 2016?" said the brakeman on Canada's women's bobsleigh team, who doubles as a fullback and wingback in the national rugby program. "London. How perfect would that be?

"But, you know, I barely know what I'm doing next year. The thought is super-exciting, but I will not be staying in elite level athletics until then. I'd like to have time to, you know, develop a relationship and maybe have a family. If I feel like I need to test myself ..... maybe I would come out of retirement. It just depends where I am in life."

Wherever she finds herself in life, the Summerside native, who has been an academic and sports all-rounder for most of her life, will be a success. In the meantime, she'll likely be helping Canada break start records in World Cup bobsleigh on the way to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. This past weekend in Winterberg, Moyse and pilot Kaillie Humphries - herself a former brakeman who is in her fourth year as a driver - settled for fifth place in the women's World Cup event despite breaking the track record in one of the runs. It was the second time in four races that the pair have laid waste to a record.

Moyse is coming off a shoulder injury suffered playing rugby, and she admits breaking the track record in the first race in Park City, Utah, pretty much set up her year. "Everything looked good on paper, but you don't know until you're on the track," Moyse said. "That start was nice. It showed me I was where I needed to be."

Moyse is less concerned about injuring the shoulder pushing a sled than, say, tackling.

"The test will be when I return to rugby 15s," the 31-year-old graduate of the University of Waterloo said. "Right now, I mostly need to use it in a linear direction. I'm not tackling somebody or reaching out to grab a jersey."

Moyse, who was the leading scorer in the 2008 Hong Kong Rugby Sevens tournament and was Canada's only all-star in the 2006 women's rugby World Cup, has been told by the rugby program to not rush back after the Vancouver Olympics.

The rugby World Cup isn't until Aug. 20. To say she's appreciative is an understatement.

"They've told me they're leaving the door open for me," Moyse said. "I can only do that if I dedicate myself to rugby for five to six months, 100 per cent of the time, without my shoulder getting in the way."

You might say her success this winter has been a start.

Not much of a crowd at all. I would guess 100 AT THE MOST once you discount all the students there. Poor planning by RC to have a test on a Monday @ 4:00p - especially since it's light out until at least 9. And knowing how many of the people there likely got in for free, I hope the girls don't get the email soon: "We tried to raise money for you @ your home games, but you're unmarketable so we need some more $ to go to the World Cup, yours truly, RC".

And what a disgusting job by the announcer. He spoke throughout the game while play was on, even commenting about how difficult the conversion was, AS THE KICKER LINED IT UP AND PREPARED TO KICK. As the hooker readied to throw in to the lineout was another choice moment this dude like to hear his voice. Typical RC response from Jen Niewendyk, the senior staffer there when I raised the issue with her... "Yeah I'm running the event but he doesn't work for RC so I can't ask him to stop".

I thought a PA announcer's job involved letting the crowd know who scored, and any substitutions. The way buddy yesterday blabbered it was as though he was on a TV broadcast. And not only blab, but pander to the crowd as though they've never seen rugby, and quite often mis-call things, or make things up.

I don't know what was worse:
- his continued speaking after being asked to stop (very politely) by someone in the crowd; or
- the absolute lack of response from RC when the issue was raised with them.

I even offered to take over!

Mutrie is a credit to both the Women's rugby team, to her own love of rugby and to her skill's in sniffing out and presenting stories about her team. Hard not to be impressed with that level of achievement!!!!

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos are deeply saddened to announce the passing of women’s rugby head coach Jenny Vincent after a brief battle with cancer.

Vincent, who was diagnosed in December 2009, passed away Sunday morning. She was 41.

Jenny was the driving force behind obtaining varsity status for the Dinos women’s rugby program, culminating in their first season in Canada West last fall. She joined the program when it was a competitive club in the late 1990s and worked tirelessly to meet the necessary standards to elevate the program to the varsity level.

She was a pioneer in women’s rugby in Canada and was involved in many firsts in the sport. A player in the first senior women’s national championship tournament, Vincent was selected to the 1987 senior national team – the first national team Rugby Canada put on the pitch. As a coach, she led the University of Victoria Vikes in the inaugural season of Canadian Interuniversity Sport rugby play.

In 2000, she coached the Alberta U19 team to a gold medal at the first national junior championships, then added a silver at the U17 national championships a few years later – again, the first tournament of its kind. Most recently she helped coach the provincial U23 team to a gold medal performance at the inaugural national tournament for that age group.

Vincent obtained her BSc from Bishop’s University in 1991 and her MSc from the University of Victoria in 1994. She was pursuing a Ph.D. in sport technology at the University of Calgary and was a key member of the team that designed and implemented a major project for Own the Podium 2010 – a database which brought together results of Canadian winter athletes from past Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, World Cup events, World Championships, and other international competitions.

A native of Montreal, Vincent is survived by husband Jim Nield and her two children, Tyler (age 10) and Isaac (8).

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 2:30 p.m. at Parkdale United Church (2919 - 8 Ave. NW). Flags across the University of Calgary campus will be lowered to half-staff Wednesday in her memory.

To honour her memory, Jenny’s family has established the Jenny Vincent Coaching Endowment for Women’s Rugby, which will support future coaches of the Dinos women’s rugby program. Donations can be made by contacting Kristine Williamson at (403) 220-3651 or kristine.williamson@ucalgary.ca.

I could have sworn that in one of mooch's great video stories that the coach "jinxy" , down in Florida, had said that "everyone's been given a chance through 2009 but now it's time to work with the strongest side forming combinations"

Well take a look at Saturdays team vs USA and tell me he is being true to the girls and all of us who support these extremely hardworking girls. There are a maximum of 6 (thats if NZ even pick some dates, or accept the offer for Canada to go down). Time to experiment is over. Work on the combinations. Iron out the kinks (of which there are still many) and get ready to play. it's just an insult to these girls with this decision making.

Nations Cup 2009 was enough of a farce changing teams up so much. Reward the girls by starting their strongest team every game. Until he does this he is just showing every girl no respect.

Like it or not, the list of players and the tone set by the coaches for Florida confirms that the pathway to the NSWT goes through the CIS system. While this has some merrit and value, I am still dismayed that we have dumped the U-23 program. If the ladies do not shine by the age of 20, my fear is that we will loose many of them after that age.
