The Solution to Future Rugby Refereeing 'Problems'[u]

Having read and listened to a lot of complaining over the last couple of weeks in regards to the state of referees at the Rugby World Cup, I think I have come up with a solution. Because commentators and fans are much better at spotting and analysing infringements, it would be more appropriate if they called the game.

The IRB should do away with referees and go with a system not unlike the way boxing judges see over bouts in the Olympics. Each game will be officiated by five fat fans sitting at home, two from each side and one neutral, along with one biased announcer representing each team. Each person will have a box in front of them with a series of coded buttons. By hitting exclusive or combos of buttons, these judges can make the call for offside, hands-in the ruck, collapsing the scrum, dangerous tackles, etc ... all the Laws. An infraction will be called when 4 of 7 have registered a particular incident within a second of each other, after which a whistle will bleet over the stadium loud speakers, stopping play. Then a robot voice, such as that on your sat nav will let the fans and players know what the infringement was. Advantage will no longer be played because teams just kick it away anyway, and we don't want that.

In the case of dangerous play, time will be whistled off and the crowd will be asked to - immediately and without delay - show a thumbs up or a thumbs down signal. Stewards will have 30 seconds to tally as many of the ups and downs as they can on iPads provided by the IRB with the money they would have paid referees, ARs and the TMO. 'Stay on' or 'Go to the bin' will be adjudged. (We don't want red cards spoiling games, so no one will ever be suspended from a match unless a death occurs.) Any such incidents which warrant a citing commission will instead be sent directly to a facebook page with a poll outlining the options for the cited player. Anyone in the world may vote on this so long as they do so within 24 hours of the incident.

'Problem' solved.

Our team is Canada, and in support, we have been busy decorating our office with the Maple Leaf flag, Canada's colours, Rugby Canada logo, a Beaver Banner and the Niagara Falls painted on our window.

Former Canadian U20 Mark Kohler has recently signed a deal with the Bedford Blues of the RFU Championship. The 21 year old winger was previously playing for Luton of the English National League 3 before being picked up by Bedford.

Hey everyone!

Hope your summer is going well. I am heading to New Zealand this fall for my first RWC and it is my first time overseas as well. To document my trip I started a blog which then got me noticed by some rugby clubs in New Zealand. These rugby clubs are organizing events along side the Rugby World Cup festivities and they wish to play some rugby against any willing Canadians.

So far I know of a game near Whangarei and Napier near the days that Canada plays its games.

If you are interested in a fun game backed by some New Zealand hospitality then please make yourself known and lets play some rugby and drink some beers.

I started a forum page just for this, so you can introduce yourself there as well.

Some one who might be worse off than us. Fiji's rugby union is in a spat with it's government and may not be allowed by the IRB to go the World Cup. It was already excluded from the Commonwealth Games due to it's domestic political turmoil. I assume if the IRB wiould exclude them from the World Cup then tey would also expell them from the Sevens Series. The public there actually follow rugby and care about it, unlike here where outside us on this forum few know it exists. Good luck to them, I hope they are allowed to compete in New Zealand so they and Samoa can both beat Wales.

Read the following article and as the topic title suggests, we have to look at what is best for the game to grow.

Our game has a stigma attached to it . It is a "too" rough a game of my kid to play.

Rugby is played by a "bunch of beer swilling" ruffians.

With Ontario' new funding from the Ontario Goverment for "Startrugby" (see the Rugby Ontario website) the Ontario clubs and volunteers will be confronted when approaching the elementary school system with all of the above negatives and the usual,"lack of coaches".

The following article provides them with a "heads-up" in how to introduce & dealing with in an appropriate approach addressing these issues while introducing the game to the prospective market of 10,000 children (boys & girls) in grades 6,7 & 8.

"Call to ban rugby scrums at schools
Last updated 4 Jul 2010 - 12:45 pm

Rugby scrums and high tackles should be banned in school sportRugby scrums and high tackles should be banned in school sport, a public health professor has said.

Professor Allyson Pollock, director of Edinburgh University's Centre for International Public Health Policy, called for the ban after research revealed injuries sustained by youngsters playing the game.

The study included 470 rugby players at five schools in Scotland during the second half of the 2008-09 season, from January to April last year.

There were 37 injuries recorded, 26 during matches and 11 in training, including 20 which needed a trip to the accident and emergency department.

The tackle was the "commonest phase of play causing injury" with head and face the most injured body part and sprain/ligament injury the most common injury, the study found.

Professor Pollock, one of the study's authors, said: "High tackles and scrums should be banned. The sport is not safe enough for schoolchildren and not enough is being done to protect the safety of children.

"We know that most injuries occur in tackles and the scrum so there have got to be much greater safety measures in these areas.

"It may change the game but it's better to have a safe game than a dangerous game.

"Concussion is under-reported because it's not being monitored properly. Repeated concussions may have severe long-term consequences.

"Rugby is compulsory in many schools - and schools, teachers and coaches have a duty of care towards children."

Reading about this carp about racial tensions rising in South Africa. I wonder its implications for the game of Rugby there.
