Can Jason M be carded if he is being paid as a pro in
France?

An FYI Doug Wooldridge is playing at UVic and Kyle A is
playing at CW. So both should be listed as
British Columbia, Victoria.

Good call side_step. I thought with the new 16 cards they could only card "sevens potential" athlete... Looks like there are a few there that will never be sevens players.
It's disappointing there is not a better balance of athletes from around the country. Hockey pulls them from everywhere and they seem to be doing alright.

It does not matter where they come from as long as they all show up in Langford to train.

The added bonus will be if all three coaches also attend training sessions this year. Word on the street is that they are on a three day rotation. If they wanted to be firefighters then they should have applied for that job and work alongside Morgan Williams.

Congrats to all players and coaches on the way they wrapped up the JWT with a win against Russia. Moving in the right direction and they now need the support of the wider rugby community as they continue into the next phase of development.

I echo these sentiments. Well done to the boys who travelled to Georgia to represent Canada and congrats on the last 2 wins. Looking forward to seeing where the coaching staff can take this age group going forward and maybe seeing some of the graduates of this program in the CRC.

Winger 14, Faust, and Slackarse - Thank you for your responses to my post. Faust - I take your point about making rugby more than just the 80-minute game. The various successes I've seen in Canadian rugby are as much about rugby culture as they are about the actual games. It makes sense that it would need to be this way in a game where the players can usually play only once per week. I think maybe there are quite a few clubs who don't know that a multi-faceted rugby culture needs to be built for their minis and kept going up through the age-grade teams. Or it could be that there just isn't the energy in many club memberships to do the work.

Slackarse - I can't think of a better place to celebrate rugby culture than in Newfoundland and Labrador where battling adversity with a sense of humour and joining together as a band of brothers is second nature. My mother's people were Cape Bretoners. There's a lot of the same spirit there. Is there a way that the Rock can lend some of that spirit to other parts of Canada? We do face the challenge of these huge spaces in this marvellous country.

Faust - What can we do in Canadian rugby -clubs, regions, and RC, to attract sponsors? What is the typical sponsor looking for in terms of pay-back? And on your point about low conversion rates from high school to the clubs - I wonder if anyone has ever polled young players coming out of high school to find out why the rate is low and what could be done to improve it.

Thanks for reading.

Slackarse, you fail to mention that the Rock as currently composed is not just Newfoundland but the four Atlantic provinces plus Quebec and usually a few BC guys like White thrown in for good luck. Not trying to take anything away from the Rock they are a phenomena on the rugby scene here in the last 15 years the likes of which I don't remember in Canadian rugbyove the last forty years I have been involved. If you want to go it alone and get ranked 20th don't forget that many NZ and SA provinces could do the same and push you down to 30 or lower. I doubt you would beat Auckland or Canterbury or Western Province or any of many other regional teams around the world. Keep doing what you're doing but remember you are Canadian and do what is best for the national team.

Mr Humphries keep supporting your tribe and your son and we will be allright. I know that is what got me involved in rugby in the early seventies and keeps me going today, including going to all six world cups so far and getting ready to go to my seventh to support my tribe, Canada.

VERY well said, jkvhumphries !

What you described of the 'tribal' elements is virtually a history of the Rock rugby program in Newfoundland. Other commenters here have noted what a ferocious sense of team unity and pride the Rock 'tribe' has ... and of course that comes from many of the elements you cited.

Tribal team spirit also comes from an Us-versus-Them attitude, and it helps when the Us feel they have been slighted, overlooked, or looked down upon, or not given due credit, or been passed over for national selection.

That the Rock could defeat the Canada Selects 19-13 a couple of weeks ago is testament to this. By rational yardsticks there's no way a team from a provincial union with only 4 clubs (Dogs, Vandals, Baymen and Swilers) should even be in the game.

To actually WIN that game is proof of the importance of the intangibles. (And SHOULD be a source of almighty embarrassment to the powers-that-be! But it was glossed over.)

But is 'teamwork' an intangible? I guess so ... since it seems to be what's lacking, across the board, in Canada.

But this is supposed to be a TEAM sport, is it not? (Not like my original primary sport - track (javelin) - where my competitor could do nothing to interfere with my performance. Only a tape measure could render the verdict.)

Rock players perhaps get passed over for national selection because in the judgment of the national coach and selectors they, as individual players, lack youth, or size/speed.

What they DON'T lack is heart, and a desire to win the game (very often to prove a point). Team spirit. And teamwork.

How many points is THAT worth, in a game ... even against players who are younger, bigger, stronger and faster?

Players on the Canada Selects team were playing for themselves, playing in order to get on the NEXT team they wanted to be on (selection for World Cup). The 'Canada Selects' team meant nothing to them. One small feather in their cap, a line on their resume, on their way to another destination.

Rock players were playing for the team they were on (and WANTED to be on) AT THE MOMENT! They WANTED to win, far more than the Canada Selects did ... because they had a point to prove.

It's an advantage to the Rock that, despite being a perennial powerhouse and multi-year national champs, they are never given the respect they are due. It's a wonderful motivator. As champions they have to go into every match as the underdog (because they are given no respect, because they're from 'THAT' province) ... so they can never let down their guard, never get complacent, never rest on their laurels.

But it also show some of what you were referring to, jkvhumphries.

Some of the Rock's motivation comes from the political elements of the game in this country. They have a point to prove ... but it seems lost, and falling on deaf ears, even when the Rock proves it year after year.

- - -

For those who follow these things ... the Rock just defeated the touring Welsh team Cross Keys 34 - 6 earlier this evening, at Swilers' Park in St. John's.

- - -

In the run-up to World Cup 2007 on August 25th the Rock played Canada (NOT Canada 'Selects') to a standstill in the first half of their exhibition match at Swilers' Park.

Halftime score Canada 12 Rock 10. Final score Canada 40 Rock 10

Now Portugal is ranked 20th in the IRB lists (61.81), while Canada is ranked 15th (69.18)

I'll bet that, as a separate nation, the Newfoundland rugby team would likely beat Portugal.

So I'm asserting Newfoundland's 'Rock' is the 20th best rugby team in the world!

Is THAT sufficiently 'tribal' of me?

(Probably too tribal. I know there are lots of SuperLeague teams that would brush Portugal aside!)

The point really, I suppose, is this : New Zealand ranks No. 1.

What's its population?

Tonga. Fiji. Ireland. (Wales.) Geographical sizes? Populations?

Small island nations (not Wales, of course), low populations, compared with England, U.S., Canada, Russia, at least.

What are their IRB rankings?

Newfoundland? 535,000 souls. 4 clubs.

Good coaching. (Slag Parfrey all you like, but he's done a great job.)

So Schumaker was right.

Small is beautiful. And has its advantages.

Humphreys, the biggest issue is keeping the kids in the game and generate interest. Rugby in Canada is failing to do this. Amount of male players has significantly dropped and so has interest. Conversation rate of High School players to clubs is very low.

You are a proud supporter of your son's entry in Rugby, but the issues is that we need more. Money is not the issue persay, but if we have interest in the sport, sponsors will come.

It is up to the clubs and grassroots to make more than a game. It is life long friendship, work as a team, ability to work under pressure & stress, and despite everything, be social afterwards. IMHO, Canadian Rugby scne has lost this. Clubs are more interested local trophies than working with the Union to build the sport and league. Too many retire and do not comeback to help keep the sport alive and support the youth coming into the sport.

I’ve never played this game, but I am certainly a fan. Rugby is a wonderful sport, combining both the art and the science of competition in a milieu of rigorous physicality. Rugby invites all body types, is a builder of character, boasts a wonderful social dimension world-wide, and, I’m convinced, can certainly be the making of an athlete, male or female. My son is a player; I am an passionate observer. I’ve read some intelligent and constructive comments on this forum.

But too much has been said on chat sites and in blogs recently (not just this one) about Rugby Canada and its alleged failings. So much talk. But it’s really money that talks. RC operates on a shoe-string budget compared to the rugby administrations in the countries we are trying to equal in this sport. If RC had $1000 for every inane, uninformed, reactionary, caustic, ignorant or inflammatory comment made about rugby administration, clubs, high school and national coaches and (this is the most shameful of all) various players in our development teams, we would have millions overnight and be able to build stadiums, create training regimes, hire coaches and trainers and pay players.

Driven, athletic young men and women are complex. Of course they require skills, fitness, and rugby intelligence to perform well on the international stage. But more than all of that, they require emotional and psychological support. They get this from their 'handlers', (parents, coaches, trainers), their fans, and also from each other. No collection of young athletes can be successful without something to believe in, something to strive for, and the unqualified support of those they're playing for. Canada's young rugby players play for themselves, for their families, for their team, and most importantly, for their country. A 'country' in this sense is made up of individual fans. If young athletes can't feel that those who have the ability to create change and development are capable of doing that and have the will to do it, they become disaffected, disappointed, even despondent.

For a moment, consider the young men only. Men are tribal. They yearn for the unity of purpose and action that can only come from feeling inspired to do something hard that requires contesting with another tribe. The tribalism that is an essential element in successful teams comes from a magical mixture of emotional connection with team-mates and a sense of connection to the fan base. In mature rugby countries, fan support is exemplified in different ways: fund-raising events, media attention, songs, merchandise, fans attending games by the thousand and cheering, and good old fashioned culturally engrained flattery of players and coaches. I see very little that could be recognized as fan support for rugby in Canada.

A development program has only so much time to build the psycho-emotional strength of a team of young players. Most of the players will have come from their high school or club teams (these are 'tribes') and they will require the creation of a new tribe as they leave high school behind. This is the hardest job - creating the new tribe. And the creation must happen quickly. If the new tribe is not created within (at most) two years of high-school graduation, whatever is created will not be strong; will not be unified; will not be able to build the concepts of commitment and sacrifice that form the basis of athletic tribalism. If the post-high school tribe is not strong, then the more mature tribe that one hopes will be the foundation of our senior men's team will not develop either. More than anything else, the tribe needs contests - that means more playing experience! Regional leagues, tournaments, tests, at all age levels, playing against stiff opposition whenever possible.

Whether men or women, our young athletes need support. They need to feel valued; they need to know that adults who have ability and political and financial power are looking out for them, believe in them, in short, love them and their game. If I were a young rugby player in one of our development programs now and I were reading the blog and chat entries that are being spat out like so much digital acid over the virtual world, I'd go looking for my next tribe in another country.

This was to be expected. A second tier nation beating up on a fifth tier nation. It's like the All Blacks playing against Canada at the WC, except this score line will be much closer.

Don't be too hard on Zimbabwe. They don't rate as a National side but their system is at least partially responsible for producing two of the best active players for two of the top teams in the form of David Pocock (Aus)and Tendai 'The Beast' Mtawarira (Boks). So far we don't have any Canadian players, present or past, that have reached that level.

Well said, Harry! More of that, and more guidance and tutelage to ensure that that coaches are doing the right thing. I see plenty of Middle School sevens going on where I am currently, which is great, but many coaches could use more guidance help them and the kids put the best possible product on the pitch. It's a key formative stage to focus on quality of technique, vision and support before it becomes too much smash and bash.

How about Oakville, Ajax, Oshawa, Peterborough, Belleville and Markham in Ontario to name just a few who are doing it as well. My club in Ajax started about 5 years ago with 29 minis and now have well over 150 enjoying themselves at the club and at tournaments around Ontario every week. We also run 2 U16 and 2 U18 boys teams and an Under 20 team as well this year. We run girls U18 and U15 (I think we have the 15s, not sure) and are trying to get our senior women up and running again. As well we run 3 senior mens teams and provide lots of players to provincial and national sides. It can be done with a little hard work so lets keep doing it.
