Speaking on this topic, does anybody remember a few years back they brought in this guy from Scotland (though I think he played in SA), think his name was Hamish....anyways does anyone remember him? Another player with an accent never hurts.

I am sort of with you Popo, but eventually the selected team and spares do have to start to train togeather as a team but in my opionion taking (I may have the numbers off by a few)a tour of 35 players and 11 staff to New Zealand to be shi# kicked is a not a good used of IRB funds. Especially a year or more before the U20 tourney.
The money spent on that tour alone could have financed two or three more camps in Canada which would lead to a larger pool selection.
The last scrimage at SLS had the U20 team split up and playing with carded and invited senior mens players. In other words the U20 team as a whole, didn't run as a team against any competion before they headed to Russia.
I am sure there were an additional 26 young men across Canada that would have loved to travel to SLS or anywere for that matter to play in a possibles vs probable game.
I know there are "holes" everywhere in what I have said but in three years the U20 have gone from #12 to #18. What ever is going on isn't working!

It is a simple problem as with all areas of elite rugby in Canada the resources are poured into a few players rather than the developing the game and providing higher competition levels fro all players which than leads to a larger better player pool to select your national teams from. This has been the problem since before the Pride days and as long as it continues we will keep seeing poor performances from the national teams with strong individual performances.

The money needs to poured into creating internal competitions that promote a higher caliber of play for all rather than developing a few guys.

"MOOSEARS. said
[quote]STOP the excuses, soon there will be excuses for Canada
coming in 500th in the World, Lichenstein and Andorra have it much easier to get players together, much lower travel costs etc. Also these are not kids but young professional athletes not little kiddies. The quality of the posts from the shag carpet basements of suburban Ontario are going down."

And, NEWBIE has a good point
"The U17 boys under Dave Chambers have had much success in their international tourneys over the years and they are not funded one cent.
The U20 are funded 100% so it really doesn't matter where they train. Alot of these boys went through the U17 program.......what has happened between that and the U20? "

I like my "Old China" Harry's response, who I may not judge to be the best referee at a pinch, but he gets the prize for hitting the nail on the head.

In real rugby world clubs the transition is from U17 academy development to pro or semi pro full time at the ages of u19s. You see them on the telly week in and out in the Super 14, the GP and Magners.

What we do not have in our corner of the rugby world is enough cash to develop a semi pro rugby team without waiting for some of our older boys to be released and to come back from plying their skills and trade over there!

So Moosehead, you should remove your brain from your ar_e and try working out the problem before blowing smoke up other peoples arses. Newbie, you are perfectly correct about the success of our u17 program. It is a credit to the players, the coaches & management and to Canadian rugby.

Regrettably, the big crunch comes ever earlier in the area of development the further the big pro nations reach down to promote and develop the next age grade in order to be able to move them up, even it is only as 7 or 8 man on the bench.

At this age ( u20s) Canada has no chance and I am sorry to say that but I feel it is absurd and unfair of voices from the sidelines with no experience of what is happening outside of their own box to dump on Tim Mc Murdy or his mentor the Headmaster, Robertson when they give equally as much time to the program as do the coaches of the u17s.

If Moose wants to change the coach and at the same time anticipate great strides forward at the next u20 tournament that we might be invited to, then he , Moose, will have to have very deep pockets to pay for a Kieran to come out of the woodwork.

Even then there would be no guarantee unless the players as in the NSMT were to have sufficient and regular fixtures to develop the game fitness level now required to win at this level.

Enough said and the less the better. Moose you just piss.d me right off.

It's sounds like there were 7 strong teams in this tournament and the two with proffessional leagues back home came out on top, not a suprise. Papua New Guinea were weak but were also the smallest country in the tournament. I am dissappointed we didn't do better but I don't know if a change of coach would have made a huge differnce. We have many problems but so do the other countries. I doubt most posters on this site know much about the junior structures in teh other seven countries that were attending, I know I don't so I think most of their posts are conjecture and opinion, with very little to back them up. We all need to work harder to make it better where we are and also quit the provincial rivalry stuff when dealing with National teams. If the whole squad is from Kamloops and they win the championship you won't hear me complaining one bit. Same if they are from Cole Harbour, or even Pickering.

Murdy has had the team long enough. The team has been in steady decline for a number of years. We can't fire the players so something need to change.

I'm sure that it is not all his fault. I have long believed that there is a disconnect between HS rugby and the clubs. We lose to many potential players when they leave HS.

We are staring into our future. If we don't do something soon we'll be playing in the IRB division 2b before you know it.

Perhaps we should not under rate the strides the opposition have made at this age grade.

Canada still has it's in-born draw back of having to deal with the geography of our Country. How many camps can the Canadian players afford. Yes it may well be correct that the try scorers are from CDI teams who are at play at this point in the Canadian season.

Do with know how the Russians fund and orchestrate there training schedule. Typical Russian philosophy is to round them all up and "put" them in a "camp" at minimal costs.

Who knows? But, the clubs in the East of the Rockies would not be too pleased if any more of their even younger talent is to be syphoned off to the great R.C. West Coast Development in order that their players have match fitness going into such iRB tournaments.

Afteral the iRB and R.C. monies invested there have not raised the National Programs to be anymore competitive in International competition, have they?

Unpalatable as it is, Canada is a part-time amateur participant in a professional program. The spoils go to those lesser nations programs that can more closely match the goals and preparations of the big professional nations.

Yes the iRB do give Canada some funding for the preparations for this tournament but how far does that go towards the cost of living in Ontario or Nfld and training in Victoria with the cost of airfares as they are ?

Better luck next year and many thanks to the kids and their families for their commitment.

Yes finishing 6th out of eight teams is not good! I wonder what this will do for the U20 mens team rankings?
The U20 have tons of talent this year and in the past two years. I read an interview with Murdy where he was talking about how successful some of the players coming out of the U20 program have been with their continued rugby careers, one wonders why these player are not successful within the U20 program?
Perhaps with the right coaching the TEAM could be successful not just individual players!
Tim may be a good highschool coach but as a national coach I think it is time for RC to look elsewhere IMHO

Clearly having guys play in the CDI and train in Victoria has been quite successful for our U-20's and Senior Mens teams.

I didn't say "all the players". but the ones that could have, should have. Nothing like getting experience playing in pressure games in front of 500 to 1000 fans to help up and coming players to deal with the mental and physical pressure of big games. But if management thinks playing touch in a camp atmosphere prepares them better for the test against other nations we will continue to lose.

Not all the players at the camp were going to be playing in the BC finals. A few but not all. Since the U20 has come into being they have steadily gone down in the world rankings.

I don't think it is hard to figure out what change should take place.

Tons of talent on this team and in previous years. So whats the problem I wonder?

The problem is that these kids are protected from playing any meaningful rugby in our domestic leagues. Why would you schedule a Canada camp the same weekend as the BC finals. And not allow the players who would be playing in the finals to play. I guess having them up at a camp playing touch is going to make them better rugby players.

This sport is run by idiots. Start up the Pride again, bring back the Welsh experiment players and lets start playing and getting the players to play meaningful rugby

Interesting to read that Japan scored twice via pushover scrum given that RC reported pregame that Canada's pack outweighed Japan's by 16kg per player.

No need to re work the system just send all the U-20 guys to Victoria where they turn nickel into gold.

Very very disappointing.

The whole age grade concept needs reworking. The unions need to connect with schools so that there is some stucture to the whole thing.
