A rugby playing architect – interesting and amusing

Here is a rugby-playing architect (Aussie Al Baxter) with very clear ideas on stadium design and an entertaining look at the thought processes of a professional player during a match.

http://bit.ly/ctnklU

With all the work that has gone into various stadia in NZ for RWC2011, I wonder how many similar concepts were taken into account.

I been there a couple of times. Saw Al Charon play against Northampton in 99 and I was interviewed on the radio at half time. Never heard the interview, but did read a report in the paper where I was quoted.

I`ve been to Twickers, Millenium, Newlands and Suncorp from the list and for viewing Suncorp is great but for atmosphere both Newlands and Twickenham are right up there. The old Lansdowne is my favourite. It will be interesting to see how the new one compares. Croke Park looks great on TV and I know people who have attended and they loved it, but it is not a rugby stadium and will probably not host many more games. I expect the atmosphere in Limerick at Thomaond would be outstanding and hope to see a match there one day. Leinster vs Munster would be a good one to attend. While not a great stadium (not even a good one) I`ve always had a great time at York. Of all the internationals I attended in Canada the most picturesque setting was Brockton Oval for Canada vs USA in November 1985, Gord McKinnon first cap by the way.

Well I have not been to the Millennium Stadium in Wales, but just taking into account that it is not a permanent grass surface it constantly sweats,is cut too short and subsequently leads too many instances of players losing their footing. So I say it cannot be number 1

Croke Park and Twickenham are close to being # 1 in the World. Having been to both I will come down on the side of the Gael`s

1 - Croke Park (Dublin, Ireland);
2 - Twickenham (London, England);
3 - Millennium Stadium (Cardiff, Wales);
4 - Suncorp Stadium (Brisbane, Australia);
5 - Yarrow Stadium (New Plymouth, New Zealand);
6 - Stade de France (been there,it is damn well drafty and
can bee a tad chilly
6 - Newlands (Cape Town, South Africa);
7 - Murrayfield (Edinburgh, Scotland)
8 - Thomond Park (Limerick, Ireland);
9 - Stade Aime Giral (Perpignan, France);[Maybe]
10 -The Greenyards (Melrose, Scotland);[for nostalga only
& the home of the 7s]
