Excellent work Bulldog2 rugby development at its purest form.

Where can we find out the results? I often read http://www.nationalrugbynews.com I believe you can submit results to that site? Will they be posted there or on this site or both?

Had a couple of schools drop out due to their own league schedule. Too many games that week plus principal won't let them out of school 3 days that week. So, Quinte SS and Brock HS are gone but Moira SS (Belleville) and Donald A. Wilson (Whitby) are in for May 6th.
Trenton HS vs. St. Mary's and Donald A. Wilson vs. Moira SS in Pool A. Centennial SS vs. Napanee DHS and Eastdale CVI vs. Birchmount Park CI in Pool B.
Found out the results from the Cherry Blossom Tournament in Washington DC. Barrie Central Collegiate won the Cup, Eastern Ontario Jr Men won the Plate, and Sinclair Secondary School won the Bowl.

There were 15 teams, 5 pools of 3. The group winners were put in the Cup playoffs, the 2nd place in Plate, and the third place in the Bowl playoffs.

Interesting the Eastern Ontario sent a rep side. Wonder if it was all Ottawa kids or they used some kids from Cornwall or Kingston as well?

Below is the newpaper article that appeared in the Belleville Intelligencer today.

    Trenton Tigers team to beat
Posted By PAUL SVOBODA, THE INTELLIGENCER

Two of the top senior boys rugby teams in Ontario will be on display Thursday at the M.A. Sills Park complex.

The second annual McDougall Insurance and Financial Charger Invitational tournament kicks-off at 9:30 a.m. with games taking place on Fields 3 (main pitch) and 2.

The defending OFSAA double-AA champion Trenton Tigers head the list of eight teams that will vie for the tourney title along with Oshawa Eastdale which was an "honourable mention" in the latest ORU top-10 senior boys rugby rankings in Ontario (Trenton was No. 8).

Tournament organizer Scott Ter Haar, formerly of Centennial and the Belleville Bulldogs rugby club, resurrected the tournament last year. Making its debut in the 1990s, the tourney had not run for several years prior to 2009.

Ter Haar, who played for the late Bob Burnett at Centennial, said his former coach "encouraged me to do the tournament in the '90s" and his dedication to the local game will be remembered Thursday."

Rounding out the tournament roster are Moira, Napanee, East Northumberland, Cobourg St. Mary's, Whitby's Donald A. Wilson and the host Centennial Chargers.

Ter Haar welcomed the addition of Brighton's East Northumberland to this year's competition with the rebuilding Blue Dragons agreeing to fill in for Toronto's Birchmount Park Collegiate.

"They pulled out at the last minute," said Ter Haar.

Birchmount Park was a finalist in the Toronto city championships last season.

"We have a pretty good mix of AA and AAA schools for this year's tournament," said Ter Haar. "There should be some pretty high-calibre rugby out there."

Leading the charge will be the Tigers, back to defend their tournament title and gunning -- again -- for another provincial title this year. Trenton is undefeated in Bay of Quinte league play and warmed-up for the season by winning its division at the prestigious Ohio Classic tournament held recently in Columbus.

Oshawa Eastdale will look to avenge a first-round upset to Quinte at the Charger Invitational last year in a match decided on penalty kicks in overtime. The team recently toured B.C.

Cobourg St. Mary's, coached by Belleville resident Greg Conway, toured Hawaii prior to the season and will provide some stiff competition Thursday.

Ter Haar also likes Napanee, which "did well last year at OFSAA" where the Golden Hawks won the provincial consolation crown.

Donald A. Wilson, known more for its powerhouse football program, plays in the always-tough Durham region and will not be a pushover, said Ter Haar.

Moira -- which advanced to double-A COSSA last year -- is quietly rebuilding its rugby program with some impressive athletes while the Chargers, perennial contenders at the Bay of Quinte and COSSA level, opened the season at the Cherry Blossom tournament in Washington, D.C. where they fielded two senior teams.

Preliminary round matches Thursday are: Centennial vs. Napanee, 9:30 a.m.; Trenton High vs. Cobourg St. Mary's, 9:30 a.m.; Moira vs. Whitby Donald A. Wilson, 10:30 a.m.; and Oshawa Eastdale vs. East Northumberland, 10:30 a.m.

    Semi-finals are 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. followed by the finals: Consolation at 2 p.m.; Championship at 3 p.m.

Spectators are reminded there is no parking along Harder Drive due to construction.

    Tigers show their stripes
Trenton High wins second straight Charger Invitational rugby crown

The Trenton Tigers scored early, then displayed some tenacious defence to defeat Oshawa Eastdale Collegiate 5-0 in a rough-and-tumble championship final at the second annual McDougall Insurance and Financial Charger Invitational senior boys rugby tournament Thursday at the M.A. Sills Park complex.

Brett Hall scored an unconverted try for Trenton in the first half as the Tigers defended their 2009 title. Last year, in an all-Bay of Quinte final,?Trenton beat the host Centennial Chargers.

Trenton coach Brian Meindl said playing in the Bay of Quinte league prepared the Tigers for a struggle in Thursday's tournament final.

"I think with the teams we face on a regular basis in our league, it prepares our teams for tough rugby," said Meindl.

The Tigers' mentor said competing at the prestigious Ohio Classic high school tournament in Columbus prior to the Bay of Quinte season also helped bond his team.?Tigers were 4-and-0 in Columbus to win their division championship.

"I think that was really beneficial," said Meindl. "To take our team down there and win four games really got the guys going. They're already thinking about driving to a Bay of Quinte title and COSSA.

    "That's certainly the goal."

Meindl fielded his First XV for Thursday's final but was not afraid to substitute from his deep bench as the match progressed, even with a slim five-point lead.

"We showed some pretty solid defence and our so-called replacements really stepped up," said Meindl. "That (Eastdale) team had some very good ball possession and they're always very well-coached."

Last year, Eastdale recovered from a preliminary round upset loss to the Quinte Saints — in overtime penalty kicks — to win the consolation crown.

This year, the Napanee Golden?Hawks and Cobourg St. Mary's squared off for the consolation banner with St. Mary's ending up on top of a 19-7 final score.

"Both teams say they'll be back, and Eastdale too," said tournament organizer Scott Ter Haar, a former Centennial Charger and Belleville Bulldogs club player.

The late Bob?Burnett, who coached the Chargers when rugby was making its Bay of Quinte high school debut in the late 1970s, encouraged Ter Haar to run the tournament in the '90s. The event was mothballed for a few years, then returned to active duty in 2009.

    Championship semi-final scores Thursday were: Eastdale 12, Centennial 5; Trenton High 18, Whitby?Donald A. Wilson 0.

Consolation semi-finals results were: Cobourg St. Mary's 7, Moira 5; Napanee 33, East Northumberland 5.

Preliminary round results were: Trenton High 20, Cobourg St. Mary's 0; Whitby Donald A. Wilson 5, Moira 0; Centennial 8, Napanee 3; Eastdale 31, East Northumberland 0.

The Bay of Quinte regular season resumes Monday with Moira at Centennial and Quinte at Centre Hastings.

The Bay of Quinte championships are May 21 at Sills Park.

Ya, it would be but since they are a "AA" school they would only play in some sort of tournament play. COSSA "AA" this year should be interesting since Kawartha has 3 schools on their side that are quite good. Adam Scott, Brock HS and TAS from Peterborough.

Rumour has it that Barrie Central is going AA this year. I guess they are going to try that since they have been coming up short at AAA OFSAA.

What is the number of students that determines AA or AAA? Have they been below it and playing up or did they just drop this year to a lower level of students? Can a school pick sport by sport to play up if they want or do they have to make adecision to cover all sports?

Harry, below is how OFSAA determines how your school is AA or AAA. You can move up if you do the proper paper work but if you feel you are an AA school but your school population is actually AAA then you must appeal. I know busing students can have something to do with it also. Some kids can't play rugby or some other sport due to being bused. I know Stouffville SS used to say due to the amount of Asian students in the school that they were AA but population wise they were an AAA school. Barrie Central may have just played up the last few years but are acutally an AA school.

    School Classification Policy
    Effective September 2010

Associations shall place their schools in classifications for the following school year based on their student full time equivalent enrolment as of October 31st of the current school year

    Northern Associations (NEOAA, NOSSA, NWOSSAA)
and schools within the Muskoka-Parry Sound Athletic Association (part of GBSSA)
    "A" = 1-600 "AA" = 601-950 "AAA" = 951 +

    All Other Associations
    "A" = 1-500 "AA" = 501-900 "AAA" = 901-1250 "AAAA" = 1251 +

An all boys' or all girls' school shall have their enrolment doubled for the purposes of determining student population numbers.

    General

A school may appeal its classification (see Appeal Process). If the appeal is successful, Associations may only shift a school one level below what their student numbers designate. When schools are moved down a classification and the school's population exceeds the OFSAA classification numbers by 10%, the Association must gain final approval from the OFSAA Classifications Committee. Associations must outline the reasons for their decisions.
Any school, with Association approval, may elect to compete in a higher classification.
A school may participate in only one school classification of competition in any one sport during a school year at the Federation level.
For coeducational championships coordinated by the Federation, an all-boys' school and an all-girls' school may combine for entry. Associations must declare such school combinations to the Federation office by October 1st of the school year.

    CAREFUL!
The above statement is completely OFFSIDE! Over the past 6 years, I have had the pleasure of meeting, laughing and learning from the rugby coaching staff at Stouffville. What an amazing group of mentors and role models for all of their athletes. Jamie, Robbie and Glenn year after year get the most out of their athletes while instilling values of honesty and integrity into their athletes. I am not surprised that they won the sportsmanship award again at the AAA Rugby Championships 2010. Sometimes sandbaggers but hey truly great in the fraternity of RUGBY. Cheers to the Spartans. Perhaps a retraction is needed here.

Retraction?? That is what the other coaches have been saying for years about Stouffville rugby and other sports at the high school as well. Maybe their coaching staff is great and sometimes success breeds jealously.

I would like to apologize to the rugby community for my comments above about Stouffville SS and the claim they hid behind the amount of Asians they have in their school. I have received a few comments from certain people that I may of blown off my mouth a little too much on a sensitive subject. I know the Stouffville rugby staff does a great job running their program and I’m sure all the high school rugby coaches in Ontario could match the success they have had in recent years. I am not a teacher nor do I coach junior club or ref anymore so the only little part that I do for rugby is run the Centennial boy’s tournament. Again, If I have made some comments about programs that are a little beyond the spirit of the game, I am sorry.

Below appeared in our local rag today the Belleville Intelligencer written by Paul Svoboda(yes, the brother of that hooker Svoboda)

    Local rugby tournament proves popular

Trenton High, Uxbridge the favourites for third annual McDougall/Centennial Invitational Friday

    By Paul Svoboda

What started out as a way to get local high school rugby teams some extra out-of-town competition early in the season has turned into a hot ticket among senior boys teams in Ontario.

The third annual McDougall Insurance and Financial Centennial Invitational tournament kicks-off Friday at M.A. Sills Park with eight teams in the senior division and four teams in the junior bracket.

Because of the high level of high school rugby in the Bay of Quinte region and the number of top-ranked visiting teams willing to travel to the event, tournament organizer Scott Ter Haar said he might have to expand the competition next year.

"This is one of the best senior boys tournaments in the province right now," said Ter Haar. "We started planning in January and had a great response. We had to turn some schools away."

In fact, said Ter Haar, the 2010 OFSAA AAA runners-up Uxbridge Tigers contacted him weeks in advance to ensure their tournament entry even before the official invitation was mailed out.

Along with powerhouse Uxbridge, currently ranked third in Ontario, the senior lineup includes:

    — Tenth-ranked Oshawa Eastdale, which lost to Uxbridge in last year's Durham Region final.

    — Brock (Cannington) Bulldogs, who lost to Peterborough Adam Scott in the 2010 Kawartha semi-finals.

    — Ashbury College, the Ottawa district entry for the OFSAA AA championships last year and what Ter Haar calls "a very keen program."

    — Cobourg St. Mary, which beat the host Centennial Chargers in the 2010 COSSA AAA semi-finals. Ter Haar says St. Mary "is an up-and-coming program" which recently toured Hawaii and New York City.

    — I.E. Weldon (Lindsay) Wildcats, winners of both COSSA AAA senior and junior titles last year.

Local entries include the two-time defending OFSAA AA champion Trenton Tigers and the host Chargers, who recently toured California with a .500 record.

Tigers are gearing up for a shot at a provincial three-peat this year as host of the 2011 OFSAA tournament which will be played at the Sills Park complex in June. Prior to the start of this year's Bay of Quinte season, Tigers marched decisively to the final of an indoor tournament at Streetsville where they lost a close contest to 2010 OFSAA AAA champion Lorne Park.

This week, Trenton was ranked third in Ontario while Centennial earned honourable mention status.

"It's a good mixture of teams," said Ter Haar. "But I wouldn't be surprised to see Trenton High and Uxbridge in the final."

Friday's junior category features four teams, each playing two games: Quinte, Centennial, Oshawa Eastdale and Ashbury. There will be no final.

The No. 1 main pitch at Sills Park along with the new artificial turf field will be used, with senior games as follows:

    Trenton vs. IEW, Eastdale vs. St. Mary, 9:30 a.m.; Uxbridge vs. Ashbury, Centennial vs. Brock, 10:30 a.m.; Consolation semi-finals, 12:30 p.m.; Championship semi-finals, 1:30 p.m.; Finals, 3:30 p.m.

Junior games are: Quinte vs. Eastdale, Centennial vs. Ashbury, 11:30 a.m.; Centennial vs. Eastdale, Quinte vs. Ashbury, 2:30 p.m.
