Hello to all in canadianrugby.c forum land. This is my first post I think (may have posted once or twice on the previous forum - long a go and far away). I am adding my voice now after being a long-time lurker because I need an outlet for my growing frustration with all things administrative in Cdn rugby. And before you say - why don't you do something about it - I am doing a lot about it - player, coach - club and high school, local union administrator. I just want to add the occasional cry from the wilderness.

Looks like the Churchill Cup details have been set and despite promises on the RC site on Wednesday to have it posted within 24 hours - there is still, as of Saturday morning, nothing there regarding this year's competition. However, a reasonably web competent soul can find out this information without RC intermediation and lo and behold on the Churchill Cup site itself it lists the basics for 2010:

    Six Teams:
    1. Russia
    2. Uruguay
    3. France A
    4. England Saxons
    5. USA
    6. Canada

Canada is in a pool with France A and Uruguay. Full CC schedule to be played June 5-19th.

According to RC - the Tournament will be played in Denver and New Jersey. No mention I can find as of yet as to where the Cdn pool will be based.

    Initial thoughts:

    1. Nice additions of Uruguay and Russia - it is good for the tournament and good for Canada's development to have full national sides and full test matches with teams at, and aspiring to be, at our level, rather than having us function as warm-ups and try-outs for top 8 nations.

    2. Once again Canada is shut-out from hosting duties - this is not good for development or growing the game locally in Canada. Clearly something else besides support and attendance is talking ($$ maybe? - if so - surely this is contrary to the IRB's tier II development manadate), as historically the Canada hosted matches have always been better attended and supported than the US ones.

    3. Still no mention of any other test matches for the NSMT in the spring window. Is this not shocking? What is the problem? Who is in charge? A club or high school team knows by now what touring sides are coming this year - why aren't we aware of the RC schedule - surely they can't still be organizing it at this late date?.

    4. One suggestion that seems glaringly obvious is for at leat 2 or 3 test matches surrounding the CC - to include test matches on Cdn soil vs Russia, Uruguay, and maybe and understrength full France test squad (a la the lightened Welsh team of last year).

Thanks for listening - hope to post more in the future. Interested in your comments.

    Cheers,

RC has gotten the details up on their website. Thanks oldbrokendownscrummachine for breaking the news to us 3 days ago and lighting a fire under RC's butt.

That would have to be one large fire. My understanding is that each country has a responsibility in hosting the Churchill Cup and now it is the USA's turn.

I believe it has much to do with Barclay's withdrawing it's sponsorship more than anything else, and subsequent cutting of cloth accordingly. A rare bit of fiscal restraint for this storied tournament.
