Just watched the North Hampton v Munster match. This is what the Heineken Cup is all about, and the main reason why I prefer the HC to S14. Passion, grunt, tribal warfare, flair, a full house, all contributing to what was truly a spectacle.

This one is getting burned to DVD and saved in the personal archives...

Brilliant defence, great attacking rugby, tactical nous, just freaking brilliant.

Watched a few over the last couple of weekends also. While I agree that there have been some great games to watch, I think you are confusing top notch TV packaging for better quality footy. If the GP and HC produced better rugby than S14 then surely that would be transfered to international test match results. The fact of the matter is that during lastyears NOv. Tour the northern hemishpere went 0 for everything against sanzar. Southern Hemishere rugby when compared, strickly by watching whats going on on the pitch, is vastly superior. At least in my humble opinion :)

Actually Wales beat Australia. Shane Williams scoring a highlight reel try if I recall...Mortlock left after a clash of heads with Jamie Roberts.

I like HC rugby more than S14. To me S14 doen't have the passion and the commitment that comes with the HC.

As far as test rugby goes, I will probably always prefer the 6N to the 3N...Just prefer the tribalism and the passion. 3N rugby maybe technically better, but that doesn't mean I enjoy it more.

Wing Ding, I find it interesting that you have more of a preference for the 3N vs. the Super 14.

I would suspect that the interpretation of the laws Downunder by the officials in the Super 14s might be the cause of your lack of enthusiasm. This cannot be the reason as you take some pleasure from the 3N which are played under the same interpretations.

The Guinness and Magners are for me better than the HC as some of the French do not whole heartedly participate in the Competition, their domestic National 14 is their premier objective of the season.

But, I enjoyed the ELVs and although in principle most have gone the way of the dodo bird they have left a considerable mark on the way the game is being played downunder and officiated by their own officiating crews.

The difference was most noticeable when Barnes and the other Northern referees with the exception of Nigel Owens, took charge of a Tri Nation match.

The Southern Hemisphere game is more fluid and subsequently faster and lends itself to be more player innovative.

p.s. on inovation and knowing the laws and how to use them was clearly demonstrated by Sale vs Cadiff this weekend . Cardif went for the driving maul while Sale refused to become part of it, simply putting one player in and Cardiff being penalised for playing blockers for the ball carrier, Powell the #8.

Good thinking and use of the laws. better than a possible penality agaist Sale should they have attempted to pull down such a maul.

Where did I say that I preferred the 3N vs S14?

Although by default I suppose that's true as I generally don't care for the S14 period.

If I was to rank the overseas competitions I enjoy watching they would be...

    RWC
    6N
    HC
    3N
    Magners league
    Currie Cup
    Guiness Premiership
    S14

    But hey, that's just me...

    Currie Cup's rubbish ...

... Air New Zealand Cup, Guinness Premiership (yes, can be boring kickfests, but maybe it's partially nostalgia having lived there) are my favourites.

I liked the Australian Rugby Championship until it was canned. Sydney Shute Shield is good viewing on the ABC. Two leagues where the guys are quite talented, but don't buy into modern 'safe' systems and tactics but rather chuck the ball about and have a go.

Mr Bandit I guess you don't have any South African friends, if you did you've just lost them. I don't get the chance to watch much overseas rugby on TV but I keep up to date on the web with most of these competitions. The one thing that the Currie Cup seems to have is the tribal aspect, it has been going on for years. On the minus side is that there are too many blow outs, two or three really weak teams each year. Air New Zealand Cup was rejuvenated this year by Southlands grab of the old log of wood the Ranfurly Shield from the Cantabs, every one loves an underdog. Each can love whatever competition they want, no reason to denigrate the others. My favourite this fall was the Americas Rugby Championship. Go Blues Go.
