Many users on this board are quick to take exception to Rugby Canada's handling of our favorite sport, however in this instance I feel they and the several others who came together 2 weeks ago to muster $155,000 of support for our ladies , should be applauded. If I could have one more wish, it would be that we could still play a team, in addition to the USA ,that would help us to better prepare for the WC.

While I do not wish to diminish the sacrifice represented by any and all involved in my first post, it has recently come to my attention that this support is comparatively thin compared to what the women experienced last world cup when close to $400,000 was in place from several sources approx one year prior to the 06 world cup.

Had that kind of forsight been present this time round, WE WOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO EXTEND OUR CONDOLANCES TO NEW ZEALAND FOR OUR INABILITY TO FOLLOW THROUGH WITH OUR PLANS. By the way, it was nice of them to try to cover for our ineptidute.

I am now of the opinion that some (not all) of this money is shame money, put up as a result of the poor optics of our women's team floundering financially in the lead up to the world cup.

Further, I am very concerned that with the progression of the game in other countries that our current ranking is going to be seriously challenged. I believe the Australian game for one has become superior to ours as manifest in the Dubia world cup. We have yet to show England that we can play at their level, and England has their hands full playing against the Black Fern. Against France, our best bet to move up in the rankings, when we played what I hope was our best against theirs in the Stad de France we did not show well.

I want to be proved wrong. I want our ladies to enjoy the glory of winning. They will go into this tournement probably in better physical condition than ever before but, they also go into it without the bennefit of any top level competition in almost one year and as near as I can tell without the full one month of practice together that the 06 ladies enjoyed prior to that event.

Fan, you're right about the Aussies. I know one of the women from their last team, and some of those in the current set up. The difference between their program now and then is massive.

But we have a very different looking squad than 2006 as well. On paper there looks to be a good mixture of youth and experience, dynamic players with speed and skill. I think this group has more potential to play and defend against an open brand of rugby that translates well to the women's level (as England have shown in the 6N).

While I still think it's a two-horse race at the front, between England and New Zealand, I think the chase group of France, us, the USA and Australia have very little between them. And stranger things have happened in finals but I think one of those four in the semis could spoil the party for the two front runners on their day.

We were very close to beating England in the semis four years ago and could easily do the same again. Canada could win it all.

'Could' is right, and I hope that's true.

But England have improved even further from 2006 with a much deeper and younger squad. The two teenage midfielders they had in the game you mention are now seasoned veterans, and one has been shuffled to the wing because they've unearthed another incredible teenager who's almost on a "try a game" scoring rate!

Can't wait for it all to start though, as it's going to be a good show.
