A date of major significance in ancient Welsh history has been revived to form the new name and emblem for the reshaped North Wales development team. The side will include ten Canadians during its four month inaugural season, with the bulk of the Canuck contingent arriving January 12th in Wales.

The team, previously known as Rygbi Gogledd Cymru, will now be called RGC 1404 which will be emblazoned on a heraldic badge above a golden Welsh dragon alongside an ornate celtic graphic within a knight's shield.

1404 is the year when Owain Glyndwr was crowned Welsh Prince at Machynlleth and led his Welsh army and supporters under the golden dragon standard.

Ten fixtures have been confirmed for the team starting on Friday 15th January when RGC 1404 take on a Leicester Tigers Development XV at their new home ground in Parc Eirias, Colwyn Bay. Other fixtures are still to be added to the schedule.

The WRU link up with Canadian rugby will involve hosting the players while reducing their numbers as the new National Academy structure in North Wales gradually develops more local players to take their places.

Today RGC 1404 can confirm ten fixtures for the forthcoming season with all home games to be played at Parc Eirias.

    RGC 1404 fixtures 2010:

Friday 15 Jan v Leicester Tigers Development XV Parc Eirias
Wed 20 Jan v Antiassassins (Chester) away
Sat 30 Jan v Glamorgan Wanderers away
    2 / 3 Feb v Scarlets, Llandovery RFC
Wed 17 Feb v Worcester Parc Eirias
Wed 23 Feb v Sale Jets Parc Eirias
Wed 10 March v Leeds Parc Eirias
Fri 19 March v Oxford University Parc Eirias
Sat 17 April v Cross Keys Parc Eirias
23/24 April v Dragons, Parc Eirias

So who are the 10 Canadian players going to be?

Looking at the fixture list (all friendly/exhibition) they seem to be academy level so I assume players in the 20-23 age range.

Interesting to also read the Canadians are to be replaced as soon as RGC 1404 identify local talent...

The Melbourne Rebels have 10 import spots open for foreign based players until they can fill with local talent. No biggy there, the Rebels should look no further then the 10 players Canada are sending to North Wales.

Does anyone know whether RC will be sending players to RGC regularly going forward ie each season - or is this a one time deal?

From what I heard, it is a temporary thing until the Welsh have the local talent to replace the Canadians.

Guys as a welshman that lived in Canada I think this is a great initiative for Canada and for North Wales. Wales has only 3 milliion people and top flight rugby is only played in a small section of the south- there's only 50 miles between all four regions! Conversely there's only amateur rugby in the north so this will be a great kickstart for the game there. More importantly from a Canadian perspective it will give these guys a taste of a different game to what they are used to. My son played for Banff when he lived in Alberta and it amazed me that for a side made up of guys that didn't really know each other they pulled off some quite comfortable wins. Canada should be up there at the top table of rugby as the game suits the national temperament- its hockey without sticks and ice. Go Canada!

RGC 1404 have won two games in a row now. It sounds like O'Toole has played very well for them. Hopefully he will be able to get a pro contract out of this.
