Rock Players in BCRN MVP club

Interesting that the first two 2012 BC Rugby News (CDI) MVP Club members are current or past members of The Rock - Zac Coughlan and now Brian McKenzie. This takes it to 5 out of 14 (36%) including 2011 - Chauncey O'Toole, Ciaran Hearn and Frank Walsh. I believe at least one other winner is from Ontario as well. Shows the significant contribution being made by easterners (or former easterners) in the CDI.

Not surprising considering Vancouver Island teams represent Winter/Spring league play for East Coasters, BC Rugby News' chief editor is located on the island, is a homer, only watches games involving island clubs and thus the nominees each week are restricted to players from island teams and their opponent that week when said editor is present and watching.
I would venture that the 36% is close (low end of the scale) to the figure that represents the the percentage amount of Rock (past and present) players that comprise the players on premiere teams located in Victoria.
What would be surprising is if a local boy from BC(grew up on Island) who plays on a team from Victoria wins the award.

Popo I'm sure Mark would be more than happy to accept your generous donation to the BCRN travel budget. The odd weekend in Vancouver to watch and report on rugby seems appealing. Maybe you could pick him up at the ferry to keep the costs down.
He's does more to promote BC AND Canadian rugby than you have or ever will.

Shameless Homer,
I don't live in Vancouver.
I disagree with BC Rugby News point of view (agenda) on what is good for Rugby in BC. I do not support groups or individuals I disagree with.
It is not my concern that BC Rugby News cannot get off the Island to report on Rugby in BC that is the concern of BC Rugby news which can be inferred from its very title to be concerned with reporting on Rugby in BC.
Hard to believe one cannot afford 30 dollars in ferry fees and 10 dollars for bus fare?

I think the above stats are a reply to those on this forum who have regularly dumped on the quality of the Rock and CRC and identify the CDI as the top rugby in the country. When Rock players compete in the CDI, they do so to a very high standard and are often named as the MVP out of the 176 CDI players playing each weekend (8 teams x 22 players).

How much of his time does Mark put into BCRN. All unpaid. Why should he have to dig into his pocket just to satisfy your idea of what his coverage should look like.
If he has an opinion on what's good or bad for BC Rugby, not only is he entitled to it but he's gone out of his way to create a platform to express it. Which is a lot different from having an agenda.
When I check BCRN I see plenty of information about rugby from all over the province. BCRN seems to be receptive to input from almost any source. Clubs or individuals. Maybe you could write a rebuttal column to the things you disagree with. I'll bet he'd be happy to put it in, although you may have to put your name on it.
Last year 7 of 11 of Marks MVP's were from BC. Based on your number of 36% of Island Premier players from the Rock and the 22 man rosters that would mean almost 24 players in the line ups. I counted 1 for CW so JBAA and UVic must be stacked with them.

As for current or past Rock players this year and last year there have been Coughlan, McKenzie, O'Toole, Hearn, Walsh, and Goodland on Island teams and O'Leary was with the Lomas (maybe a couple of others?) Certainly not 36% + of Island rosters as suggested by Popo. However, this small group (7 players out of CDI league wide 178 on any weekend) has provided 36% of 2011 and 2012 BCRN MVPs

I love how Island teams take such pride in bringing in out of province players to win a recreational rugby league. What an amazing accomplishment. These clubs must take pride in defeating clubs full of local talent by stacking up their teams with canadian imports.
Sad thing is that this has now spread to Van Islands private highschools.
Is winning all the matters now days ? Is winning an amateur recreational league by stacking your team with Canadian imports something to be proud of ?

I like Mark Bryant. I don't always agree with his take on everything but no one can question his passion for rugby and promoting the game. The great thing about his site is that you can now comment on his articles, at least the editorial ones. Don't like his take say so, but you have to sign your name to it. Strange nobody has.

Rusty I have commented on a number of his articles but then I also sign my name here.

Shameless Homer and Paladin,
I never said Mark of BC Rugbynews is not entitled to his opinion, I said I do not support things I do not agree with which was in response to shameless homer suggesting that I pay for Mark's trips to the Vancouver which Shameless homer said the BC RugbyNews could not afford. I also provided some costs for the travel to show it was not that expensive to show that it is hardly out of BC Rugbynew's reach and i also suggested that if one is too be the voice for BC rugby they should probably get off the Island once in a while rather than rely on voluntarily submitted reports for without those there would be no information from anywhere else in BC as BC Rugbynews does not leave the Island.
And to clear up my comments about what I said before any more of them get construed with your interpretations of what I said that best supports whatever argument you want to put in in place of what I actually said.
My comments merely pointed out several factors that do not make the fact that a Rock player receiving the BC Rugbynews MVP that interesting, namely that many rock players play on the Island and are seen fairly often, as the matches viewed by the individual who awards the award are predominately on the Island, hence it is not surprising. It is not an insult of the quality of Rock players, It is not an insult of the quality of rugby played in the BC Premiere.
It did have negative connotations towards the practices of the Island clubs who do a poor job of developing local players from the community and my opinion on this won't change until I see lineups on Island premiere squads filled primarily with players from the Island who grew up on the island. I also did imply that BC RugbyNews comes off as a homer which is not bad, which is based on his views expressed in his comments.
My feelings on the Island based clubs is that they do an excellent job of providing high quality rugby, and providing a place to play for elite players Canada wide. And the guys who play for these clubs are some of the best players in Canada. What they (the Victoria based clubs) fail miserably at, is local development of the game and players, which to me at least is unacceptable if the sport is to grow in this country.
Yes the BC RugbyNews provides information about rugby from around BC, and yes it is one of the only if not the only sources for information on Rugby and it does an adequate job of this service. But I disagree with much of the editorial content, presented there and feel a lot of it represents what is wrong with Rugby in BC, and Canada. It is people with those type of views that made it easy for me to leave the sport and sever any and all connections with little or no regrets.

Strange nobody has.Rusty Lock one of the reasons people do not like attaching their names to their opinions when posted is that many who are online have a hard time from separating their argument against someones opinion and attacking the individual for having that opinion. I have no hard feelings towards anyone in the rugby community and try to focus my opinions and arguments on the views and opinions I agree or disagree with without attacking the individual... but as we have witnessed all too often in this forum and other places unpopular rugby opinions can lead to many personal attacks. I do not wish to be subjected to that so I enjoy the ability to share my opinion in anonymity.
A proper debate on a subject does not rely on knowing who said what but the content of the argument of each individual. If what a person says makes sense and seems to be well supported with reasoning and fact it does not matter who the source is.
I think BC Rugby News did not like the fact that people were disagreeing with his editorials and expressing that view point and was incapable of properly debating their content hence he set up a system that allowed him to control the the negative views. knowing full well that many people do not feel comfortable putting themselves out there. Especially on his site where he regularly attacks an individual's character in his editorials as evidenced by any number of his comments about RC and certain individuals employed there (which if you want can be looked up).

Hard to believe I could have misconstrued this as a negative comment toward BCRN

CW first div. and premier scored 11 tries against Meraloma on Saturday. 6 were from former CW juniors (plus 6 conversions from another). Maybe not a full line up of Island players, but something more than a miserable failure.

Just like Abby!Good on VV. I like Mark and visit his website daily; I think he does a tremendous service to the rugby community. It's just his view on club development and mine slightly differ. I don't mind out of province players supplementing programs, I just don't think you depend on them entirely.
Nice to see VV is doing it the good ol' fashion way.

BC Rugby News is a great website. When I am out of the country and looking for news on the BC Premier League (or anything rugby, really)I look to BCRUGBYNEWS.COM before I look at the BC Rugby or RC website.
The service BCRN provides to the clubs (free of charge, by the way) is invaluable. MB's commiting to watching a game EVERY weekend, so I don't think he deserves criticsim for not taking 7 hours to go to and from Victoria to watch UBCOB vs Capilano.
MB's views are a little(maybe a lot) slanted towards the Island clubs, but its understandable as he lives there. If you lived in Burnaby and were a rugby guy, you would become a Burnaby Rugby fan over time.
We should all commend Mark on the job he does do. Besides, I don't think "provictoriaslantonbcpremierrugbynews.com" has the same ring to it.
