It is going to change the implications for the Referee for the game.

IMHO it is the first time that a criminal conviction has happened in a sport event. So the level implications of actions of the players has turned. Thus the effect of one players action can turn out to be a criminal act. The ref is there to witness it and speak out against in a court of law.
It might has always been there, but the Canadian court system is starting to be more noticeable on the playing grounds.

Agreed. First time I remember seeing it is in an NHL game years ago between the Leafs and Flyers. I think one of the Flyers was charged with assault...Then of course you had Marty McSorley and Donald Brashear.
It means when tragic incidents like this happen all parties will need to have their facts straight.

Wayne Maki got charged for a high stick against Ted Green for a high stick to an unhelmeted head in the early seventies. I can`t recall if he was convicted or not. Green suffered a fractured scull and brain damage.
